Product Description

They ll Build A Barn From Your Bones!

Wes Craven unearths the darkness that festers beneath an isolated community in Deadly Blessing, a rural tale of mistrust and bloody murder from the director of Last House on the Left.

When Martha marries into a close knit sect she finds herself shunned as an outsider by its fanatical members, but when her husband dies mysteriously while riding a tractor expressly forbidden as a tool of the devil, things take a darker turn. Marked as a incubus by her neighbours, time is running out for Martha and her visiting friends, as plagued by nightmares and fearing for their lives, they face the violent fury and retribution of old time religion.

One of Hollywood s masters of terror presents a tale of rural horror and simmering evil from the golden age of video terror.

5.0 out of 5 stars "..GREAT 80'S WES CRAVEN MOVIE.." 5 May 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a pretty cool Wes craven horror movie that is long lost since it was made in 1981, this was the fifth movie that he made, the story is pretty cool with lots of bizarre things going on and has a very unexpected ending!! The movie stars a very young and sexy Sharon Stone in her first major film role, she appears in the movies most famous scene where a spider goes in her mouth!! This is a cool 80's gem worth picking up.

3.0 out of 5 stars Eerie thriller but confused ending 26 Jun 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is not a bad effort from Wes Craven, having an eerie and at times claustrophobic atmosphere. It is set in an American country community very akin to the Amish but these people are called the Hittites who, according to one character, "make the Amish look like swingers".

After her husband dies in mysterious circumstances, Martha (Maren Jensen) invites two female friends, Vicky and Lana (Susan Buckner and Sharon Stone respectively) to spend some time with her on her isolated farm in the Hittite community. In fact, Jim her now deceased husband was once a member. If there is one thing that the Hittites hate, it is someone who leaves their community and strangers. (OK that's two things), which does not bode well for Martha and her friends. In fact nasty things happen to anyone who transgresses Hittite morality. Could there be more than human nastiness at work as weird and nasty things happen? Leader of the community, Isaiah, a suitably manic looking Ernest Borgnine knows more than he is letting on; and what exactly is the Incubus?

There are some scary moments in this film but also some well-worn cliches. There are the usual things that go bump in the night and also the daft things that people do in this sort of film such as going out alone in a strange place on a dark night when there is a killer on the prowl. The ending throws up a couple of surprises but also leaves the viewer wondering what it was all about.

3.0 out of 5 stars unusual setting for a horror 25 April 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Horror films set in the old West are rare, and this early Wes Craven offering has a kind of unique feeling to it, as sophisticated city types clash with the ancient ways of the Hittites, strictly religious folk who don't welcome the unbelievers and strangers to their land.

Those who stray from the good path are consumed by an "incubus" rising from the fields to take the godless away to purgatory.

Lots of thee-ing and thou-ing in the dialogue to suggest an old time world, despite the film being set in 1981, and it is fun to see Ernest Borgnine in such a film - chewing the scenery.

A few interesting touches here and there and only some very minor gore, set this out as a mood piece rather than the average slasher, which is no bad thing. There are a number of odd sub-plots that don't seem to quite fit with the main story flow, and the final appearance of the incubus does seem to sit opposite what the entire rest of the film has tried to set up, but all in all this isn't a bad little film.
