This is great addition to any respectable dvd collection for those interested in learning more about martial arts. Im not talking about learning to take down four guys with a flare of a nostril. Its not that type of documentary.
It takes a look at some of the most popular and some of the less known martial arts through the experiences of the masters teaching in their arts home countries. The masters divulge their secrets to the travelling journalist and Martial Artist Josette Normandeau. The set covers;
KARATE
AIKIDO
MUAY THAI
CAPOEIRA
KALARIPAYATTU .....an Indian martial art (though interesting)
and SAVATE. (...why?)
Lets set out the pros and cons.
Firstly the cons;
It is presented by an aged French-Canadian female Martial Artist. It says on the box that she has had 25years of martial arts experiece. I suppose that she is a good martial artist for her age. In fact, she gets a physical beating off a Savate kickboxer and a verbal beating by one master of her own art ..Aikido.....I thought that was quite funny. It also concentrates on the spiritual. The mind over body and not enough kick-ass chop socky. Although to be fair there are some good moments of each. As a presenter she only lets herself down now and again. I did cringe when she mentioned one master who works as an under cover cop. Lets hope those blokes dont watch it eh? I had visions of him getting surrounded by criminals with machetes because she bumped her gums about what he does. The title is deadly arts. A bad choice of title created by someone who seems to have no knowledge of what the dvd contains.
Now the pro's
It is very well informed and just seeing the masters in action is worth the cringey Jossett moments. I will use the Karate episode as an example. Several masters are visited. One monk, one world war 2 survivor, one cook and the under cover cop (ok i've grassed him up now too!). The way each master has adopted Karate into his sole really shows how much you can get out of martial arts depending on what you put in. Also that you can bring your personality to the art. I believe that being persistant, respectful, dedicated and female, Jossett was more able than anyone else to get masters to let their guard down and talk about themselves and their art. The bonus is that she was on their territory. That was the one let down in mind, body and kick ass moves. It showed too much of home, filling in the gaps as Chris's airfare ate into the budget. Just watching the deadly arts dvd made me want to pack my bags and make off for those exotic lands and do what I love doing best.....and martial arts. Go on, buy it.
