5.0 out of 5 stars Deadfall 16 May 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Despite the presence of Michael Caine in the lead & Bryan Forbes at the helm, Deadfall died at the box office. John Barry's music however has been rescued & restored by FSM who present the complete score as originally issued on the 1968 LP release with a further 2 bonus cuts.

The 14 minute plus 'Romance For Guitar & Orchestra' (played by Renmate Tarrago) is reason enough to purchase the score. Integral though it is to the film's structure, taking place in `real time' at a concert hall and undescoring the robbery at the house, it stands independent of anything else heard in the score and is undoubtedly a major jewel in Barry's crown.

`Statue Dances' is a curious piece of ephemera as it updates the Barry sound of `The Beat Girl' era and adds a playful Spanish twist. The remaining 3 instrumental tracks of the original score is fairly typical of Barry at his best and bears the unmistakable signature of the man who scored Bond. Further cementing the Bond comparisons is the presence of Shirley Bassey who lends her dramatic pipes to the movie's sole song `My Love Has Two Faces'.

The 2 bonus cuts are versions of `My Love Has Two Faces', the first sung by an unknown male vocalist opens and ends like a Bond theme and it's a shame that we do not have Bassey singing this version. The second is an instrumental demo played by an uncredited group who raise the tempo with piano & sax - at a guess this may have been considered for a commercial release.

Unlike many FSM releases, `Deadfall' is not a limited edition and has been in circulation since 1997 which is a measure of John Barry's continuing popularity and devotion.

4.0 out of 5 stars One Track : Romance for Guitar and Orchestra. A Masterpiece! 3 Aug 1999
By Liberty Lost - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
If you found this title you probably are a film student, a musician, or took "Movie Soundtrack" at SJU(NY). There is only one reason to buy this soundtrack : the exquisite track : Romance for Guitar and Orchestra. A dramatic and romatic classical composition with accompaniment by a Guitar Solist. The female solist adds a definitely Spanish spin to the techinally dificult and emotional guitar parts. The final result is spanish guitar set to an classical piece. That's why you should buy it! Definate make-out music! ;) The piece was prefaced by a mood setting tuning of the orchestra and guitar, which is ommitted from this soundtrack. Never-the-less, the piece retains much power. The video seems impossible to find... Romance for guitar was the center piece of the DEADFALL. The victims attend a concert perfance as Micheal Caine, a cat-burglary, robs thier home. Similar to the baptism scence interspaced with gang slayings of GODFATHER. Thanxs to the professor who introduced me to this piece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vintage Barry! 10 Dec 2007

Being an avid John Barry fan I've been collecting his Soundtracks for years. Deadfall is one of those soundtracks that one appreciates more if you've seen the movie. Romance for guitar and orchestra, for example, takes one back to both the symphonie hall and the house where the robbery takes place. The CD version has added vocal tracks by Shirley Bassey and an uncredited male singer. I highly recommend this 1997 reissue by Retrograde Records!

Approximate running time is 41 minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT soundtrack! 19 Nov 2009

I simply LOVE John Barry. Everyone knows the Bond themes and may even recognize other film work by Barry, but this recording is not well known at all. The real gem is the Romance for Guitar & Orchestra. Several versions of My Love Has Two Faces gives are on this recording and it's nice to hear how it was treated. The movie is good too. A gay theme is woven into the "heist" story and Michal Caine is in his prime here. Actress Nanette Numan sets the classic 70's tone and in here style and may be recognized as one of The Stepford Wives. I recommend highly this recording and the DVD too. There is an extra featurette on the DVD about John Barry, so the two together are a great buy. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars I second the above 9 Jan 2002

I took the movie sound track class at SJU almost 3 years ago and I still found myself thinking about the guitar solo, so I finally looked it up online. I only remember a few things from that class, but this is definitely one of the highlights.
