Product Description

In a grim Dundee of urban decay and criminal deprivation what happens when the cold, calculating world of gangland retribution collides with the psychosis of a serial killer? Kara has a debt to gangster Tony and takes to the streets to earn the cash. On a job she encounters the killer's victims' dumped in the woods just outside the city. Terrified, she escapes, making an anonymous phone call to the police. An investigation led by newcomer DC Louise Walker begins, but she is not the only one determined to catch the killer. Tony, devastated to learn that his daughter is one of the victims, vows revenge. Who will find the killer first? And what kind of justice will prevail?

It's hard to believe this is a début novel. There's such an assurance about the handling of the plot, a refusal to go for easy goodie/baddie characterisation and, above all, a gift for sustaining the narrative pace that you feel you're in the hands of a seasoned thriller writer. It's a worthy winner of such a prestigious prize. It's a hugely enjoyable read, time flies as you follow the police in their private lives and their investigations and I'm afraid all I can do is resort to a cliché - it really is a page-turner.

Be warned! 20 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
This is not a book to read if you are in the house alone. It's most definitely not a book to read in the dead of night. Truly chilling, atmospheric, and thought provoking, it's been a long time since I've read a novel which succeeds on so many different levels. I was amazed to discover this is a debut book, and I'll certainly be looking out for more from this very talented novelist.

By Tess
Format:Paperback
A tense, fast paced set crime novel set in the Scottish industrial city of Dundee. The main character Kara embarks on a roller coaster ride which sees her encounter a pair of brutal gangsters, prostitutes, drug dealers, social workers, tough cops, the local gangster and a serial killer!
the story is set in the tough city streets, exposing Dundee's dark underbelly and of course the chilling setting of the infamous Templeton Woods.
For a debut novel, Dead Wood is nothing short of brilliant and once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. It now leaves me eagerly waiting Chris Longmuir's next crime thriller.
If you like Ian Rankin, You'll love this, so take my advice and buy it, you won't be disappointed.
