Review

"'All the hard-boiled charm of Chandler and the down and dirty authenticity of closing time in Dublin' - Guardian 'If you're a writer, embarking on a new piece, beware of reading anything by Adrian McKinty. He is a cross between Mickey Spillane and Damon Runyon - the toughest, the best' - Frank McCourt 'Evocative dialogue, an acute sense of place and a sardonic sense of humour make McKinty one to watch' - Guardian"

Book Description

An illegal immigrant escaping the troubles in Belfast, young Michael Forsythe is strong and clever and fearless – just the man to be tapped by crime boss Darkey White to lead a gang of Irish thugs against the rising Dominican powers in Harlem and the Bronx. The time is pre-Giuliani New York, when crack rules the city and hundreds are murdered every month. Michael and his lads tumble through the streets, shaking down victims, drinking hard, and fighting block by bloody block. Soon Darkey anoints Michael his rising star. But when Michael seduces his boss's girl, the saucy, fickle Bridget, things quickly go south – south to Mexico, that is. Double-crossed and left to die in a Mexican prison, Michael plots his return to New York, there to wreak terrible vengeance on his betrayers. A natural storyteller with a gift for dialogue, McKinty delivers the explosive underworld of organised crime, complete with Irish lilt.

totally enjoyable 2 May 2010
Format:Paperback
excellent read, but be prepared, you'll have to go on to read the rest of the trilogy.
Despite his brutality and egocentricity you cant help but find yourself rooting for Michael Forsythe "The protagonist". (I read the third book first and still think its the best of the series)

McKinty is a smashing writer, I'm on my fourth of his now, "Fifty Grand"...loving it

This was bought as a gift for Christmas. However, the reason I chose the book is because I loved it myself. It's the first book in a trilogy and I thought it was just brilliant. If you get a chance, please also check out the audiobook brilliantly narrated by Gerrard Doyle - it's real treat. The giftee enjoyed the book very much and has since read the second book in the series. The other two books are The Dead Yard: DEAD Trilogy (Dead Trilogy 2) The Bloomsday Dead: DEAD Trilogy (Dead Trilogy 3) I also recommend other books by this author - The Cold Cold Ground (Detective Sean Duffy 1) and Falling Glass and Fifty Grand and Hidden River (Five Star Paperback)

A good read 20 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I got this book when it was on Deal of the Day at £0.99, a real bargain for a book that maintains its tension and appeal throughout. Characters are well drawn and the period it is set in - the time of the Northern Ireland hunger strikes - is really well captured and described. I liked the lead character, Sean Duffy, very much and the crisp way his thinking and speaking go. Even if you can only buy it at full price, it's well worth paying.
