This is a prequel to the fabulous Scott and Bailey TV series. Cath has not written the series, but was asked to write the prequel. A big ask I would think when you are writing the back story for characters who you have not created (but are obviously a fan of!)
Big fans of the series may have had their doubts about how well the book would be written. Fear not!
Cath has absolutely grasped all the central characters and the voices sing out loud and clear in the story. Great back stories of the them all and a terrific murder story all the way through as well. It embodies the best of Cath's talent and also what we like about Scott and Bailey; the human element that draws us to the characters each week and in every series.
The dialogue in the story is tightly written and the story moves along at a great pace.
The tragedy of human life is movingly written. Heartbreak, in whatever form, can hit anyone at any time. This story deals with it and the aftermath from very different angles but all done brilliantly.
So, as a Scott and Bailey fan, and a Cath Staincliffe fan, this book hits the mark on the both counts, big style!
