Product Description

Scavenge the violent wilderness, build devastating weapons, and take down the terror together.

Dead Space 3 brings Isaac Clarke and merciless soldier John Carver on a journey across space to discover the source of the Necromorph outbreak. Crash-landed on the frozen planet of Tau Volantis, Isaac must comb the harsh environment for raw materials and scavenged parts. He will then put his engineering skills to the ultimate test to create and customise weapons and survival tools. The ice planet holds the key to ending the Necromorph plague forever, but first Isaac must overcome avalanches, treacherous ice-climbs, and the violent wilderness. Facing deadlier evolved enemies and the brutal elements, Isaac can choose to team up, not only for his own survival, but for that of mankind’s. Play together with a friend or go it alone as Isaac Clarke using the seamless new drop in, drop out co-op functionality. Each mode offers unique story elements and gameplay.

KEY FEATURES

  • Team up and take down the terror together
    • Play the full campaign in online co-op or single player
    • Easy drop-in and drop-out play
  • Head planet side and experience a hostile new environment
    • Discover underworld cities and accept side missions
    • Explore the frozen terrain and search abandoned encampments
  • Uncover the past and embark on a thrilling expedition to save mankind
    • Discover the source of the Necromorph terror and fight to fend off the extinction of the human race

Product Description

  • A tense new story delving into the secrets of the Necromorphs - and the Markers
  • Face a hostile new environment on a planet of ice
  • Team up against the Necromorph threat with series-first co-op option
  • Upgrade your weapons with the new Weapons Bench system

Dead Space 3 delves further into the secrets of the Necromorphs and the mysterious Unitologists, as you follow Isaac Clarke on his mission to save humanity from the reanimated, mutated threat. Clarke's quest to discover the source of the Necromorph outbreak takes you to Tau Volantis, a key location in the backstory of the Markers, the mysterious monoliths worshipped by the Unitologists, and which may hold the key to mankind's victory.

Tau Volantis offers a hostile new environment for Dead Space, replacing the  series' traditional black of space with the harsh white snowstorms of this ice planet. As you travel through the frozen wastes you'll need to overcome everything this environment - and it's many side-missions - throws at you, from abandoned encampments and underworld cities, to treacherous ice-climbs and the ever-ominous threat of an avalanche. On top of this, the white void of Tau Volantis is just as deadly and unpredictable as the black void of space, with deadly creatures and other shocks awaiting in the blizzard, offering familiar gameplay for long-term fans of the series.

There's new gameplay coming to the series, too, with the introduction of a new co-op mode. Say hello to Sgt John Carver, a fellow Necromorph survivor who can join the campaign in optional drop-in/drop-out co-op. Playing in co-op mode can reveal additional story details, and players will each have a slightly different experience as dementia kicks in, with one player seeing things the other does not. It also enhances the action and combat as part of the game's new cover system as you team-up to face the Necro

I was reluctant to buy Dead Space 3 due to the amount of negative reviews claiming it's not scary and has lost its way. I loved the first game but thought the second was average at best, with a nice multiplayer option. I was offered a digital download code via Origin for £15 so took the plunge and boy am I glad I did!

It's true this isn't strictly survival horror like the first game, but I'm glad they didn't just make another Dead Space 1.5 (which is exactly what they did for DS2). But the evolution makes complete sense within the context of the series. Isaac Clarke isn't an engineer fighting for his life anymore, he's a man on a mission, and his experience dealing with Necromorphs mirrors the player's, we're used to fighting them now and have been given an arsenal of weapons much more suitable for dispatching them.

The new weapon crafting option has really opened up the game's combat in some interesting ways, whilst at the same time, made some of the more traditional options redundant. The Plasma-Cutter for instance, is rendered completely pointless, it's slow, deals too little damage and you'll discard it the first chance you get. That's a shame, because not only was it a brilliant weapon, its core attribute of shooting off limbs has also been made redundant in favour of massive firepower weapons that will just blow away everything in their path. However, now that you can craft your own choice of weapon, you have total freedom to pick any two weapons old and new and combine them into one weapon with two fire modes (plus additional bonus effects like electrocution or acid rounds). The previously useless Force Gun which just pushes enemies away and deals a very small amount of damage, becomes an incredibly useful secondary fire option on just about any weapon.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sigh......why? 15 Feb 2013

Fun: 2.0 out of 5 stars
I tend to write reviews for two reasons. One, because a game is just mind-bogglingly good; or two, because a game sucks.

I've made an exception to my own rule here because this game is not dreadful per se, BUT it's shockingly bad for a Dead Space title.

Bear with me here, this is my intro.....When I first discovered the Dead Space (DS) franchise I had no idea what to expect. Survival horror for me was restricted to the early Resident Evil titles. Well, DS certainly made an impression on me. The violence, slow movement of the protagonist, genuinely terrifying gameplay and weird weapons and locales made it stand out as something different. If I'm honest, it even took a little while before I really started to appreciate, and gradually love the game (still taking about the original DS game). Anyway, I played it through, dying with alarming frequency as I reached the end and completed the game. And once I had finished it, I knew I had to get the next instalment.
DS2 was superb. An improvement in every way. I loved it. Story, characters, locales, weapons, battles galore. Nigh on perfect.

Enter DS3. Maybe a little unfortunately, it had to live up to a considerable amount of hype as a result of the almost cult-like following developed through the success of the earlier instalments in the series.
And unfortunately, it falls short. Considerably.

Gripe 1: Dead SPACE. Geddit? It's meant to be in space. Why so much of the game is on a planet(s) is beyond me, and frankly peeved me off.

So the game. Well, the story starts off (after the intro) in an orderly fashion. Which in itself is wrong. If I wanted order, I'd be playing SimCity. I want chaos. Straightjacket chaos without weapons... Isaac is kinda older and more zen.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dead Space 3 (PC DVD) 13 Feb 2013

Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
A few thoughts on the game: I agree with some other players that this isn't a true survival horror like the first in the series. It is decidedly more shoot-em-up oriented, and whilst a good game in its own right, I didn't find it as satisfying as the first couple of games. If you like constant barrages of enemies and ammo, health and loot in abundance then this is for you.

There are 'jump' scares where enemies appear from behind you or behind a closed door, but the true horror factor just isn't there in my opinion. You will find yourself getting more annoyed than scared after the fiftieth time this happens. Remember the tension in the early part of DS1 when you had nothing and the first necromorphs were chasing you down the corridors and almost get you in the lift? And your ex haunting you all over the place. And the opener, nursery and eyeball bit in DS2? Great stuff. Not so much here...

Graphically the game looks fair to good, but isn't making use of the current levels of hardware. Having also played Far Cry 3, the character detail and animation looks dated in comparison. The control system doesn't port particularly well from a console controller, so if you have an Xbox, I'd use the controller on your PC if you can.

The weapon crafting is novel but gets a bit a frustrating to constantly hunt through hundreds of options, given that the game just wants you to blast thousands of enemies into a gooey mess.

The audio production is very good however and truly enhances the atmosphere, and the character acting is convincing and well paced.

Some of the crash detection stinks, getting stuck on tiny objects when millions of creatures are screaming at you is very aggravating!
