Essential Reading 16 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
This book is essential reading for anyone who eats fish or who cares about marine ecosystems, but most especially for anyone who eats fish and wants to continue eating fish. It's a culinary tour of the world's fisheries and ranges from the poshest restaurants in New York to the fish and chip shops of Britain and to the sushi bars of Japan, via the shrimp farms of Thailand, the small boats catching sardines in Portugal to the sea louse-infested farmed salmon of British Columbia.

It's not all bad news, despite the paper by Boris Worm (published in Science in 2006) predicting the collapse of all the world's major fisheries in the next forty years. Taras Grescoe is definitely a piscivore, and does an excellent job outlining the sustainable fish-eating options - the basic rule is to eat fish from the lower trophic levels, not the top of the food chain, and say no to fish farmed by feeding them ground up fish - not that you'll be tempted to eat them ever again after reading the accounts in here. Above all, the message is know where your fish have come from. The final chapter, on solutions, should be required reading for all politicians.

Can We Eat Fish? 6 Feb 2011
By jmer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A well-written easy read about a serious issue. This is an up-to-date description of the "seafood" industry - how world demand for fish food causes overfishing, and how this and fish farming damage the environment. Fish farming surprisingly, further reduces the numbers of wild fish. I learned which fish are not overfished (not many). Grescoe predicts that by the late 40s, seafood populations will be reduced to jellyfish (edible) and slime if methods of farming are not changed, and if overfishing continues. He includes interviews with grassroots fishers, fish farmers, and chefs from around the globe. This book answered all the questions I had regarding the seafood industry.
Fantastic, capturing info to understand the Fishy Business of the Fish we eat 27 April 2010
By S. Matzen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
It's a great read to understand how each of the top fish dishes around the world impact the local oceans/bays, cultures, and the global seas. It's not a book to turn you off from seafood forever, but does arm the reader with knowledge to make a more informed decision when purchasing fish. Give it a read, at a minimum it's great to understand the ways fish are farmed, caught and traded!
