Inspired by the best of Hong Kong action cinema Jack is a master of hand-to-hand combat and a skilled marksman, allowing you to take down gangs of enemies at once in mass brawls or gun down criminals using an intuitive new cover system.
There are some situations though, where a man's best friend is better equipped to handle things and you can now not only order Shadow into action with a few simple commands but also take direct control of him at any time. With vicious disarming attacks for both man and dog this is a third person shooter with real bite.

The game is designed so that you won't plough through the levels armed to the teeth with arsenal, you'll need to enter into fist fights to disarm your enemies and take their weapons. To begin with the balance seems just right, however on later levels the way the game forces you to do hand to hand battle is rather ludicrous. In the last few levels enemies run towards you unaffected by your attempts to mow them down with bullets, yet despite being oblivious to gunfire a few well directed punches soon manages to stop them in their tracks. At one stage I actually emptied a cartridge of 42 machine gun bullets right into an enemies chest as they ran towards me, before promptly punching the gun out of my hands! Its a scene that made me laugh out loud, but loses its humour when it becomes a scene that becomes all too familiar. Surely it would have made far more sense to have not allowed you to have weapons at all?
The levels featuring your trusty hound Shadow mixes up the action, Shadow sneaking around stealth like and literally tearing enemies apart. After non-stop shooting and fist fights it comes as a welcome break.
In terms of basic mindless action its not a bad game, it just lacks flair. However, its those final few levels that things start to grate and you really find yourself just wanting to get to the end of a level, and these last few levels really seeming to drag themselves out. Theres about 12-15 hours gameplay on offer, depending on what difficulty setting you choose, and its fun for about 8 of those hours before it all goes a bit silly. I can't really see there being much incentive to replay either, other than for die hard achievement hounds.
There's also a DLC at 400 MSP and put 1250 to your gamerscore, seriously, is a good game.
It's not a perfect game but it does keep you gripped as you and your trusty and rather bloodthirsty four-legged friend set about avenging the death of your father in a typically dystopian city where danger - and annoying snipers - lurk around every corner.
I think many people may have been put off buying this due to the concept of a man/dog tag team - and admittedly it IS daft - but it works surprisingly well. Unlike many companions, Shadow is actually a very useful asset, and you'll be thankful for him when surrounded by multiple foes. Plus he's simple to control; just press the up directional button and he'll savage the nearest enemy while you gain valuable breathing space. There are also a handful of missions as Shadow himself that hinge on stealth. You'll either enjoy them as a change of pace, or like me find them a bit tedious. But that may well be because I'm rubbish at that kind of thing. (Deus Ex, the horror...)
Lastly, in the current climate of ridiculously short games, Dead to Rights bucks the trend by being relatively long so you won't feel short-changed.
I wouldn't rate this above a game like 'Timeshift' in terms of a hidden bargain gem, but compared to the bland likes of 'Blacksite' et al it's one that will keep you entertained for as long as it lasts.
