This is a cracking story that zips along, and takes the reader into the world of a police investigation into the deaths of elderly ladies. But the deaths may not be all they seem, and Carter’s feisty, wonderfully-human Bev Morriss is lead into all kinds of unexpected twists and turns as she tries to untangle the crimes, and to sort out her own life along the way. A really strong, really involving story-line, with several enjoyable little sub-plots skilfully woven in. I'm greatly looking forward to Ms Carter's next book.

A Fantastic Read! 6 Aug 2007

This is the second offering from Maureen Carter. I really enjoyed her first book, Working Girls. Dead Old has a great plot, twists and turns. There is a good mix of everything, sadness, humour, gut churning and shock. The main character, Bev Morris, is a combination of Cracker and Briget Jones. You will be hooked. The only frustrating thing I find is the relationship with Oz - it doesn't feel genuine and lacks chemistry. Other people may read into it differently though. So be a devil and buy this book!

I enjoyed this book, first because of its location in my birth city, Birmingham, secondly the relationship between the characters worked well and thirdly I liked the touches of humour throughout in spite of the darkness of the plot.

The proofreader is to be congratulated - there were hardly any annoying distractions with misplaced apostrophies, etc. Some of the situations are somewhat unlikely but, hey, it is a work of fiction after all.

Not as good as the first one 20 April 2012

Maureen Carter's first novel in the series, featuring Beverly Moriss, was a fantastic debut. Gritty, merciless world of prostitution, paired with fresh and believable characters, made this crime story a great surprise. Unfortunately , the sequel " Dead Old", is not as good. The crimes are equally disturbing, cruel and violent attacks on elderly women. Bev Moriss is, again, feisty and with harsh, dark humor, but the plot is extremely farfetched, and not in the least original. The solution is actualy, quite predictable. It still wont stop me to read the third and the fourth books in the series.
