If you haven't read any of David Hewson's books this is an ideal introduction into the Italian crime mysteries that he is so good at. If you have read some or all of them, then you may find this too short a read - I did. It's well worth reading, don't get me wrong, but I would have liked it to go on for longer. Where the beginning of the story was more paced, I felt the ending was a bit rushed - possibly due to the constrictions of the word length.
Overall, it was an enjoyable read focusing on one of Nic Costa's side kicks, Gianni Peroni, who ends up being the only detective looking after the shop when two bodies are discovered in different areas of the Tiber river in Rome. It falls into Gianni Peroni's hands to discover why the corpses are wearing what appears to be the same pair of odd socks.
