Biography

When Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields met in Toronto in 2005 they wanted to hate each other. The two were dating sisters and resented the forced time they were expected to spend with one another, until a conversation stumbled upon their mutual obsession with the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland. Zach was so preoccupied with ghosts as a kid that he was put into therapy, and Ryan parents moved ... Read more in Amazon's Dead Man's Bones Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully madcap record 28 Mar 2011
By Tom
Format:Audio CD
Got this after seeing blue valentine and being impressed with Ryan Gosling's singing in it. Absolutely loved the album but I can see why it might not be for everyone... That being said, if you like ghoulish lovesongs with great melodies then go for it. One of my favourite albums of the last few years. Try it if you like a bit of doo wop, Arcade Fire, The Flaming Lips, or The Sleepy Jackson...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Actor, Great Album! 4 April 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Dead Man's Bones is weird and funny and sinister and brilliant. I've had it a while and hadn't got around to writing a review so here it is. I was curious because I'm a fan of Ryan Gosling `the actor', and I saw and loved the Youtube videos of the bands' live gigs. And what a nice guy Ryan is. How to describe this album . . . it has a kind of 50s/60s zombie B movie vibe, a Mexican Day of the Dead carnival of characters, mostly undead, and a querky school choir doing backing vocals. And Ryan's Elvis/Chris Isaacs/Nick Cave crooning with minimal production, makes this very eccentric and the coolest buy you could hope for!

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting 20 Sep 2011
Format:Audio CD
This album has to be, without a doubt, the best album I have purchased in the last few years. It makes me want to turn the volume up, turn the lights out and go on a zombie/ghost adventure!

4.0 out of 5 stars Where is it?? 10 April 2013
By DG
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Well I ordered this awesome CD after hearing some of the tracks on Youtube. Ryan Gosling has a very unexpected voice :) I personally love 'Pa Pa Power' and 'In the room where you sleep'. Unfortunately I would have loved it if I got the damn CD, ordered it 5 days ago with one day delivery and still not arrived even when my orders say 'dispatched' not happy :( Paying that extra £5 was not worth it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Spooky and rather beautiful 21 Feb 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Excellent debut album - the lyrics are funny and the melodies haunting. The inclusion of the kids choir on My Body's a Zombie for You instantly ups the ante. Pa Pa Power is pretty catchy. A great driving soundtrack.

4.0 out of 5 stars Catchy, quirky and very listenable 24 July 2011
Format:MP3 Download
I'm not quite sure how I found out about this album, but I'm glad I did. I love the ghoulish lyrics and use of haunting piano melodies. The choir add to the overall effect nicely and I have found myself humming the tunes after only a few listens. Great stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars We won't destroy you - we will not destroy you 2 Jun 2014
By Buzios
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
So, heartthrob actor Ryan Gosling gets together with his pal Zach Shields to make a zombie/ghost themed album featuring a children’s choir – what could possibly go wrong? But wait – I can sense you skipping to the end already – has he gone mad – why would he review such rubbish? But even though everything about this formula should suggest a total disaster to be avoided like the plague, the result of this unlikely combination is not simply surprisingly good – it is surprisingly superb.

Actors branching into music is usually something to avoid – witness Macauley Culkin’s recent tour doing pizza themed Velvet Underground covers where he was rightly persistently booed off the stage. Horror based themes either suffer from being extremely cheesy or laughably over serious. And as for the involvement of children in adult music, this is rarely something any band can pull off – only Pink Floyd with ‘Another Brick in the Wall” just about got away with it.

However, Ryan Gosling has here pulled off something amazing by mixing these ingredients into a seriously cool and commendable work. Since acquiring this album I have played it repeatedly many, many times and cannot get the catchy and often beautiful tunes out of my head. The album is weird, quirky, original, melodic, creepy and downright brilliant.

Apparently the project began when Shields and Gosling met and found they had a mutual obsession with ghosts. So they planned to create a horror musical but realized that putting on a stage production would be too expensive so it became this album, released in 2009. They also set themselves certain constraints, such as not doing more than three takes of any song in order to allow the imperfections to highlight the strengths of the music.
