An incredible album born of an epiphany the singer had when attending Mexico's Day of the Dead festival. To condense the back story I read, it goes a little like this; the artistic innovator behind the Dead Skeletons project and the Dead Magik album you're considering buying right now was incredibly ill (having been diagnosed HIV positive) and was on a pretty self-destructive path (drugs and such) when he saw a sign on a wall at the festival that translated as "he who fears death cannot enjoy life". This became the manta for the opening track, `Dead Mantra' and the spark for the wonderful album that follows (I read that tale in free music paper Stool Pigeon by the way). A heady blend of chanting, heavy-psychedelia and hypnotic repetition.... A phenomenal album, really life affirming and it kicks some serious ass at the same time...a truly rock 'n' roll experiance that's free of the cliches that sometimes get in the way....
Musically expect a mix of White Hills and The Brian Jonestown Massacre combined with messed-up Krautrock vibes and shamanistic chants. It's a pretty original album and a sound that's difficult to describe but hopefully that gives you an idea.......Do what I did, download `Dead Mantra' first and then tell me it's not the best thing you've heard in years?
