What happens when your best friend gets what you've always wanted?

Krissie and Sarah - best friends for years - have always wanted different things from life. Krissie has no desire to settle down, whereas Sarah married a doctor in her early twenties and is dying to start a family. So when Krissie becomes pregnant after a fling and Sarah can't seem to conceive, things get a little tense.

Krissie and Sarah decide to go on holiday along with Sarah's husband in the hope of getting their friendship back on track. But what starts as a much-needed break soon becomes a nightmare of sexual tension, murder and mayhem...

Review

'A Grand Guignol comedy set in Glasgow and on the West Highland Way ... FitzGerald has written an accomplished and gloriously black comedy that belies her status as a debut novelist.' -- The Herald

'A gripping, addictive psycho-thriller, Dead Lovely succeeds largely thanks to an off-beat, absurdist sense of humour that turns the books disturbing and obscene topics into startlingly original comic material.' -- The Big Issue

'I found plenty to enjoy in Helen FitzGerald's debut ... a real page turner.' -- The List

'While hiking in the highlands ... festering resentments erupt into adultery, weird sex and madness (sounds like the best holiday ever to us). Great fun and oddly moving.' -- Tatler --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars WRITING WITH GUTS (AND A DOLLOP OF GORE!) 13 July 2008
Format:Paperback
Funny and grotesque in turns, this is a page-turning ride through childhood friendship, unexpected motherhood, lust, blood and guts - by way of sharply sketched social workers, bobble-hatted hillwalkers and a feisty anti-heroine juggling post natal depression, awakening urges...and murderous intent. But, strangely - you can't help liking her, even as she sinks deeper in the mire. Looking forward to the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Talking Nonsense 4 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback
I have just finished reading Dead Lovely and it is a cracking book. An absolute page turner. I am frankly astounded by the previous review which was downright nasty and smacked of some petty and distasteful personal agenda! I am actually surprised Amazon allowed it to be seen on their Site. Having walked the West Highland Way I found Fitzgerald's description to be evocative and convincing. Murphy clearly didn't read the same novel as me. Fitzgerald is an exciting new author who is going to build a strong fan base in Scotland. Well done Fitzgerald! (And hopefully we will gub Norway in the World Cup Qualifiers as well!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Complex, comedic and fast-paced 9 July 2008
By SuzieB
Format:Paperback
This novel is refreshing in the sense that it doesn't fit any particular genre - it's part contemporary fiction and part thriller with some darkly comedic moments sprinkled in. I don't want to give anything away about the plot as I'd hate to spoil the read, so suffice to say that you will not be able to put it down - I read it in one sitting!

Black comedy indeed, the book deals with some very difficult issues in such a light manner the reader is left perturbed. A very strong debut novel.
