5.0 out of 5 stars Teenage Classic! 5 Sep 2011
Format:Audio CD
I was semi-obsessed with this band as a teenager. Being a fan of Nirvana and REM they seemed like the perfect meeting point between my need for both heavy-ness and heartbreak. 'Dead Letter Chorus' serves them both up in bucket loads. 'Always Echoes' is bouncy grunge-pop, 'Yellow' is reflective Michael Stipe style rock, 'Jessica' is three chord indie-grunge fun. Their finest moment probably comes with the opening 'Get The Keys And Go' with its wonderful lyrics ("I want a rooftop, full of purple raindrops, there is a secret way") and psychedelic riffing and first class Dave Grohl style drumming. The noisy, teenage enthusiasm of the music combined with Bernie Simpsons laconic delivery and at once heartfelt and surreal lyricism were always a winning combination. They were the next big thing back in 1999 for a little while before they gave us a rather great second album (2000's 'El Toppo') then called it a day. This album still sounds perfect on a sunny day so why not give it a go, it's certainly cheap enough at the moment! If you enjoy 'Dead Letter Chorus' you should try an album by Seafood, they lasted a bit longer and are also in danger of being forgotten...

Whether or not you like this album is probably a matter of taste, but Dead Letter Chorus is undeniably a good collection of songs. Get The Keys and Go and Lull start things off well - demonstrating the band's combination of distinctively full guitar sound and mature handling of melody. Always Echoes and closer, The Picture are as good examples as you will find of post-Nirvana rock. At the same time, however, songs such as When We Were Friends, Yellow and Forgot to Breathe are proof that the band have a good sense of how to craft something more delicate.

5.0 out of 5 stars One amazing album... 21 Jun 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This album really is one of the best I have ever heard. A track called "yellow" has guitar work and chord groupings that most bands could only dream of... You will hear this music in your head again and again - this is what music should be and how it should make you feel!

5.0 out of 5 stars future cult heroes 23 Feb 2000
Format:Audio CD
A cracking album of crunching guitars and simple but affecting lyrics. This reminds me of the wedding present when they were still young and dangerous! One of the few albums I know where you don't want to skip a track.

5.0 out of 5 stars What A Record! 27 Jun 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I first heard this album about three months ago. The first song, Get the Keys and Go is brilliant. The best thing about the album is its lyrical content. The opening of this song, "i want a rooftop, full of purple raindrops", stuck to me the first time i heard the album and i've loved it ever since. Thia is a must buy!
