4.0 out of 5 stars How to play a priest in the Weird West, 23 Sep 2000
By J. B. Ten Berg "JBtB" (The Netherlands) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"Fire & Brimstone" is one of five supplements that expands upon the special character classes from the Deadlands Players Handbook, the other supplements being "Smiths & Robbards," "Ghost Dancers," "Hucksters & Hexes" and "Book o the Dead." Fire & Brimstone deals with the Blessed, a class of heroes in the Weird West who derive their magical abilities from the strength of their faith. These character work their magic through miracles and divine interventions, rather than deals with nature spirits or manitous, or to be more specific, through God. Or not, as we learn in this book. This book is written in the PC climate of the nineties, rather than the more realistic not-so-PC climate of the old West, thus women have equal rites, and more religions than Christianity in all its guises travel the Weird West. So this book describes how to play not only Catholics, Protestants, and Mormons, but also Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Taoists, and Hindus. Furthermore it distinguishes between various factions, cults and sects within those major religions. The book also gives lots of new miracles, gifts, (divine) interventions, enemies, and relics for the players to broaden their characters. Furthermore there's some information for the Marshal, that's the Game Master in this system, and an adventure. All in all it's a well-rounded package with some extras for the whole family. It is well written, but quite frankly also a bit boring. Let's be frank, of all the character classes the blessed are among the most boring; hucksters, harrowed, and mad scientists are much more interesting to play. However if you want to play a priest, a nun, a rabbi, or a Taoist monk, this book is an absolute requirement for you Weird West Campaign.
