Since completing an English course at university, I have been somewhat put off reading. This book was recommended by a friend and since picking it up, I was unable to put it down again - I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a book so much, and it has given me the impetus to get back into reading.

The book was beautifully written with wonderful characterisation - Garrood draws the reader into the life of Annie and allows us to feel great empathy with her situation.

I am greatly looking forward to Garrood's next release.

Ernest has died of a heart attack and Annie is left to deal with his absence as best she can after 60 years of marriage. Her son Billy is concerned about how she is 'coping' and asks a local clergyman - Andrew - to visit her. The two get on well and soon Annie is telling him the story of an abusive marriage. Interspersed with Annie's story is her developing relationship with her grand-daughter, Ophelia, who comes to visit. This is a book both poignant and amusing and the author brings to life what must have been a common story of the 1940s and 1950s. Annie with her strength of spirit, Ophelia determined to be her own person and Andrew the compassionate clergyman who is not sure he believes in his marriage or his God all remain in the reader's mind long after they have finished the book.

I found "Dead Ernest" absolutely "un-putdownable". When I reached the end of the book I wanted to go back and read it again. I missed it as one might miss a good friend. I gave it to a friend for her birthday. Her husband started to read it and couldn't put it down. His wife read it in a day. It is a wonderfully easy read, but it is a book of great substance. The author, Frances Garrood is brilliant at dialogue and characterisation.

The main character, Annie, who has suffered a forced and unhappy marriage to her selfish, abusive husband, Ernest, is left to come to terms with his death. Two unlikely people come into her life. She confides in her local vicar, Andrew, and forms an unexpectedly close relationship with her gradaughter, Ophelia. The book is about forgiveness and letting go of the past. It is funny, sad, heartwarming and "un-bitter", given that there is a great deal to be bitter about. I can see it making a wonderful feature film, (with perhaps, Judi Dench as Annie.) I strongly reccommend this book to everyone. I feel that even those who don't particularly enjoy reading will be glad they read it.

A beautifully written book It is the best I have read in a very long time.
