Product Description

Product Description

1869, England.

Inspector Drewes is instructed to investigate a possible fraud at the County’s railway company.

All seems well, until the foreman is discovered murdered the next morning.

Suddenly Drewes is thrown into a complex web of murder and deceit.

The longer Drewes takes to solve the case, the more lives are put at risk.

As he draws nearer to the truth the Inspector is faced with the realisation that the criminal is perhaps the most dangerous person he has ever encountered.

'Dead Ends' is a brilliant re-imagining of the classic Victorian detective story that will captivate readers from the first page to the last.

“A gripping murder mystery and thrilling read I would thoroughly recommend.” – Richard Foreman, best-selling author of the Raffles series.

Mel Hodgkinson is a writer. She lives in Shropshire with her husband and two sons. Her books include the best-selling 'Shattered Clues'.

More About the Author

According to the guidelines, this is the part where I'm supposed to share anecdotes or interesting details with my readers.

This may prove problematic.

I've never been an international woman of mystery. Though the lack of biographical details in this entry might go some way towards solving that.

Unlike the narrator in my book, I've never stood in a 19th century police station questioning witnesses. Nor have I ever apprehended a murderer after investigating the clues set before me.

I am married with two children and have yet to discover that my husband is an alien, a spy or secretly involved in a plot to build an underground volcanic lair. He has been digging a lot in the garden though.

I live in a small terraced house which refuses to have a secret passageway leading to a vast subterranean chamber built into it. I'd consider planning permission, but it's not as much fun if you have to build the secret passageway yourself.

In short my biographical details are fairly mundane. I do have a very vivid imagination though, which always helps when writing about events which stray just a little beyond the boundaries of my own experiences.

4.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric Victorian Crime Story 17 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a well-paced crime story that kept me on tenterhooks, guessing until the end. I love the way the author evokes the Victorian atmosphere through her use of language and description. The characters are convincing and there is deft use of humour to lighten what could be a rather dark story. The crime and its context are also convincing and cleverly portrayed. I hope we will be able to read more about Inspector Drewes and his sidekick Withers.

I'm a great fan of the Historical Crime genre & at first I found the language of this book and the detective rather stilted. Not for long! Quickly I recognised the true voice of the detective. The tale is told in the first person and once you have your "Victorian" ear in tune the language enhances the period feel. The conversations and attitudes have a genuine 19th century feel to them. This is not the glib Historical Crime that merely transports the modern investigator into an historical setting - 21st century language and all. If that's what you want this isn't the book for you.
The plot twists and turns before all is revealed but remains totally believable from both the point of view of historical accuracy and plot development. Nothing jarred.
I recommended this to a friend, who read it with enthusiasm and quickly came back to find if there were any more! The answer is yes. I've only managed to find "Shattered Clues" but deeply hope that Mel Hodgkinson will write many more ..... I will certainly buy them and look forward to reading them with pleasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable mystery beautifully set in a 19th century English town 28 Aug 2013

Great series set with beautiful description in a 19th century English town. The characters are well cast, true to the era, and described with subtle humour. A great way to fly back in to Olde English village life and solve a mystery in the old fashioned way - with your brain. Very enjoyable.
