Review

It's like the author went screaming through the zombie genre with a baton in one hand and a blowtorch in the other. Check this one out. You won't be disappointed. --Joe McKinney, author of Dead City and Apocalypse of the Dead

Reminiscent of the early style of James Herbert; this book doesn't pull any punches or release its teeth. --Paul Huggins, ZombieJunky.com

There's more to fear than the Undead in Porter's horrific vision; Dead Beat is a welcomed addition to the genre. --Gregory Solis, Author of Rise and Walk

Volatility, gore, twists and ghoulishly pleasurable. --Lori Bowland, LivingDeadMedia.com

Heartbeat versus Dawn of the Dead! Porter has delivered a barn-storming horror debut where the flesh-eating, walking dead aren't necessarily the worst monsters you could meet. Fantastic stuff. --Matt Hilton, author of the Joe Hunter thriller series

This novel starts with an excellent foreword by Iain McKinnon and grabs you straight away with the wonderful first line.Three short chapters reel you straight into a zombie outbreak from hell where in an instant someone has changed your day to day existence and rewritten the rules....elements of "Shaun of the Dead"..you have questions straight away for the author and I found myself flicking back into the book and rereading sections to look for answers..not often a novel of the zombie genre makes me think!!!
Dead Beat smoothly introduces elements of George Orwells "1984" or "lord of the flies" which add to the neverending horror build up...note to self do not read certain sections when eating breakfast! Nothing in "Dead Beat" is obvious least of all the final quarter of the book where each page I turned expecting it to be the last and a bit of an obvious climax..where instead there was more, opening new questions, throwing the reader a curveball whilst maintaining the novels fast pace and keeping your heart rate racing to the end.
ps I think some of the characters are definitely local!!
I look forward to devouring Remy Porters next novel with pleasure!

Brilliant take on the Zombie genre; set in a small village somewhere near YOU !

Very atmospheric, lead character is believable and well rounded, really good plot and characters actions exactly how you would imagine - we all have a dark side don't we ? and Mr Porter exploits them to the full .....so good to see a zombie novel that A) isn't centred somewhere in the US B) had overly macho characters with big guns and C) deals with the frailty of the human psyche.

10/10

You must buy this book, cover art is brilliant, if you are a novice zombie reader this is a great introduction to the genre.

Dead Good! 26 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback
I really enjoyed this book. It mixes droll humour with gore and realistic and repugnant characters. In the style of horror greats like James Herbert, it dives straight into the blood and guts, setting up characters to be slaughtered mercilessly. The true horror is in the hearts of some of the characters, and an isolated police officer has to battle with them and with the mauling undead. It rattles along at quite a pace as well. Buy this book, if you like zombies or horror.
