Book Description

13 Aug 2009
Life's tough in America. Especially when you're dead. Faraday thought finding a runaway girl would be easy money. But when the girl turns up dead - the first American in decades who hasn't relived as a zombie - Faraday must hit the streets to find her killer. Standing in his way are undead gangbangers, a police force rife with bigotry and lifism, and the zombie crime lord of Harlem. But with the help of a necrophilic pathologist, a severed head named Dorothy, and a reporter that would literally give her right arm for a story, Faraday must discover why the dead girl didn't come back to life. And he better be quick before the animosity between the living and the dead sparks a riot that could burn New York City to the ground. In a country where the afterlife is the same as life before death, can anyone really live at all? Welcome to Dead America. Land of the dead and home of the grave.

2.0 out of 5 stars Readable, but fairly clichéd 11 July 2013

It would be unfair to say I didn't enjoy this book, because I did find it entertaining. I read it in a couple of sittings so it can't have been that bad. I did find a lot of the text rather corny though. Very gumshoe. It certainly reads like it's from the point of view of a 1950s private investigator, but is set in a near future where I imaging not even New-Yorkers speak in this way. Plus a lot of the little quips the character makes seem forced and not particularly humorous. A little cringe-worthy in fact.

The plot is acceptable. It's not going to shock anyone with the revelations later on in the book. I was hoping for something a little more unexpected from a story set in a city populated by the both the living and the dead. The attempts to link the conflict between the dead and the living to serious issues like racism fall flat and would have been better avoided.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read 12 Jan 2013

Format, proofing and editing seems goof to excellent on the Kindle.

It's nice to have a slightly different slant on the whole zombie/undead thing. Or is it?

Dead America is a good read with a gentle noir side order. The alternative two class citizen living and ... not quite is interesting and makes for a fun read and a good plotline and story.

True zombie purists would presumably hate it since it conforms to few accepted standards. Perhaps that's their loss.

I'm still in two minds if I liked it, but I did enjoy it. CW.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read 27 Dec 2012

I truly enjoyed this novel, which I bought out of curiosity - I hadn't read anything by the author before but I certainly would again. The main character is cynical and likeable, the action is well-paced and there are several genuine laugh-out-loud moments to go along with the plot. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes their stories a little different, one that zombie fans and private eye fans alike would enjoy. I read the book a month ago and it is still fresh in my mind as one I really liked.
