Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review:

In a nutshell:
The girls from Dead or Alive are back in the Xbox 360’s first ever beat ‘em-up. The usual mix of stunning graphics, accessible gameplay and bouncing chests combine with an all new online mode for one of the most feature packed fighters ever.

The lowdown:
In hardcore beat ‘em-up circles Dead or Alive is often sneered at for being too shallow, but although it may not have the depth of some of its rivals this is the perfect game for first time fighters. The combat has been tightened up since the first game, so that it’s much harder to perform counters and there are less overly powerful super moves. One thing that hasn’t changed is the amazing graphics, particularly the various backdrops with a fight in a market where every apple on every stall can be sent flying. The game is still relentlessly sexist in its portrayal of women but treat it as Carry On Virtua Fighter and you won’t be disappointed.

Most exciting moment:
Countering everything your opponent can throw at you and then knocking them all the way down the stairs of the Temple on the Mountain stage.

Since you ask:
One of the best unlockable secrets in the game is the chance to play as Spartan-458 – a female version of Master Chief from Halo. She even gets her own level based on Nassau Station.

The bottom line:
A showcase for the power of the Xbox 360 and a fun, accessible beat ‘em-up to boot.

Whether or not you're gonna like this game depends purely on what kind of player you are. If you're a hardcore player who likes a challange, then this is the game for you. If you also want some entertainment, you might want to skip this game. Thing is, it can get really frustrating really fast. Even on normal (the minimum difficulty setting), it's easily one of the hardest fighting games I've ever played. Not to mention that it has one of the cheapest final bosses in videogame history. The online mode, on it's own, is pretty good. Unfortunetely, it suffers from some major lag issues every now and again. You can also get stuck on the victory screen sometimes (rare, but does happen). All in all a good hardcore game, but it could have been better.

So near,yet so far. 9 Feb 2006
First of all,i have to start this little review by saying i am not a huge 3D Beat 'em up fan...i never have been, with the exeption of the Soul Blade/Calibur and Rival Schools games.
My fighting heart will always lie with Capcom and SNK's titles.

Most 3D fighting games just don't work well enough and sadly Dead Or Alive 4 proves this fact.
I remember playing the first DOA game on the Playstation and Sega Saturn, and at the time is was probably the best of the genre it most deffinatly better than the lame Tekkan series, until Namco released Soul Blade and later Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast and for me,DOA was a distant memory.
Now we are back with Tecmo's DOA again on a brand new shiny machine to continue where the pointless DOA Ultimate left off.
First of all i need to get the graphics out of the way...they truly are beautiful, although i doubt this game even scratches the surface on what the 360 can actually do.
The selection of characters on offer include the usual mix of familiar fighters including the over-rated Kasumi, the Bruce Lee wannabe Jann-Lee,there are a few new additions including my personal fave,Kokoro.
Secret characters are also included, including GenFu,Ein and a Spartan soldier from Halo.
Alot of the characters feel incredibly samey and more attention seems to have gone into the female characters than the males.
The combat system is flawed at the best of times, sure,it moves nicely and is wonderfully animated, but just doesn't feel right, for a start the counter system is a very hit-and-miss affair and the blocking is unreliable. This is where things get frustrating in the single player mode, the CPU AI is all over the place, you'll fight once and win quite easily then next you'll be repeating the same fight over and over again because the CPU characters seem to counter over 80% of your moves then just juggle combo you to death...it's extremely annoying and will result in harsh words being shouted at your TV!!
And finally, there is the last boss..Alpha-152,i have to say this is the cheapest, cheesiest boss since M.Bison on Street Fighter II
and because DOA 4 DOES NOT have any easy or novice difficulty options,it just makes it too hard and almost ruins the whole game.
The Xbox Live options are similar the DOA Ultimate, good for a while untill the lag kicks in,although the lobby and shop additions are welcomed.
So on the whole, this is a game i would recommend for a night in with your mates,i also suggest you try and purchase this second hand,it's just not worth £45-50.

i have always been a fan of the so called 'beat em up' games such as tekken and virtual fighter but it was only dead or alive 4 that lead to become so frustrated after continuously being denied victory and other times where there is nothing you can do in the situation of the computers '10 hit combo' other than tapping the keys rapidly preying for only luck which plays a large part in the game
i was also surprised by how hard the achievements are to recieve such as 80 wins in survival for gold medal to what seemed like a joke.
The graphics are in fact great and fighting moves are well intergrated with the opponent
A good game but if you are familiar with game rage i really really suggest you stay clear of this or you will be close to throwing your console out of the window.
