I am not a tradesman, but I do consider myself to be a DIY "expert", with 20+ years of experience. I bought this tool as I already have a Dewalt cordless hammer drill with two 2.0ah Li-ion batteries, so a bare unit was all I needed. The first job this was used for was to install the rails on about 40 metres of post & rail fencing, equivalent to about 200 screws. 4mm x 70mm screws drove in with absolutely no trouble, including those driven into the 100mm solid oak gate posts or into knots in the posts. No pilot hole needed, not a single split even near the ends. And I never needed to recharge the battery once during the whole job! Much easier and less fatiguing to use for long periods than a regular cordless drill due to the significantly lower weight and the driving mechanism means all the torque is transferred to the screw, not your wrist.

If you are not used to this kind of tool, the driving power and speed could be daunting at first - it is easy to bury the head in soft woods - but with a little practice you get used to it quickly. And make sure you use bits that are designed for impact drivers, I am using a set of Wera bits and there is no sign of wear on the first bit. I have heard tales of "normal" bits getting mashed up in next to no time. It's a bit noisy too, but this is normal for impact drivers and not unique to this machine. Again, you will get used to it.

My only gripe is that it would be nice to include a case to help store the driver, bits etc together, but when you can get a proper Dewalt case off ebay for just a few quid it's not a big deal and not enough for me to dock a star. Overall, probably the best tool I have bought in the last 5 years (although maybe my Makita SDS should take that accolade!).

I bought the impact driver as some of the other tools I have struggled with some screws.
The impact driver is brilliant best thing that I have aboard my van.

Quality & Power 17 Jan 2012
By A. Stevens TOP 500 REVIEWER
Like all DeWalt power tools, this is well built and powerful. Very comfortable to hold and use. Not heavy, very compact to get into tight places. Features a handy LED lamp to illuminate screws if working in poorly lit areas. Used with the lithium ion battery you can get almost limitless endurance. Have used this with optional hex drives with 3/8 inch sockets to do up nuts and bolts, and whilst it is not an impact wrench, it does give a good enough dose of torque for most tasks. Handy belt clip on base. Variable speed and reverse drive for removing screws and nuts, bolts, etc. As other reviewer has stated, not supplied with a case. Original DeWalt cases can be bought online from reputable dealers for a few pounds. Have used impact drivers from other manufacturers, notably Ryobi. The Ryobi is slightly more powerful at 170Nm max torque against the DeWalt's 150Nm, but rotational speed is quicker with the DeWalt plus the DeWalt is less than half the weight and size of the Ryobi. Likewise, the DeWalt will outlive the Ryobi. For the price, you really should consider this tool. If there is one drawback, the lithium batteries are pricey, but certainly worth the endurance and weight difference over the standard batteries. Recommended.
