Product Description

Product Description

Designed to be used both with ground coffee or ESE pods, this all-metal espresso maker allows you to make coffee shop-quality drinks, including crema-rich espresso and smooth cappuccinos, with the same motions typical of a 'Barista', thanks to the professional chromed-brass filter holder and 'Automatic Cappuccino' function.

Energy-saving function -- The stand-by button allows maximum energy saving, saving money and respecting the environment.

Patented 'Automatic Cappuccino' -- The 'Automatic Cappuccino' function allows you -- with the single press of a button -- to transform the milk in the built-in carafe into a thick and smooth froth, for a perfect cappuccino. Practical and easy-to-handle, the carafe can be placed in the fridge, and when it's empty, by pressing the "automatic clean" button, a full cleaning cycle begins, cleansing all internal parts. With a single touch, EC860.M lets you choose between espresso, cappuccino, latte or just hot water for tea or an infusion.

Professional filter holder -- The professional filter holder, with an integrated crema device, is suitable for ground coffee (one and two cups) and E.S.E. pods. The 'end-stroke lock' mechanism ensures that the filter holder is attached to the machine body.

Cup warmer -- Features a dedicated button for the cup warmer, so the cups are always ready for use and coffee can be enjoyed at the ideal temperature.

Traditional milk frother -- Traditional milk frother for hot water and steam delivery.

Thermoblock heating system -- The EC860.M uses thermoblock heating circuits, particular insulation and very high-yield components, which can reach energy efficiency levels, and mean the device is ready to use in 40 seconds. The ergonomic structure of the EC860.M allows you to access all the machine parts from the front. Thermoblock heating systems allow you to accurately control the temperature of the water when brewing coffee. The EC860.M comes with a second thermoblock, which is dedicated to steam for frothing milk. The thermoblock also saves energy by only heating the water you use.

De'Longhi, an Italian brand for more than 100 years, provides high-quality, efficient and stylish domestic products. Quality and reliability remain integral to De'Longhi's brand values, and all products are subjected to rigorous quality checks. This is particularly true of coffee makers, which are designed, produced and assembled by hand in the Italian production sites.

NOTE: Packing the coffee grounds too tightly in the filter can cause the pressure to build up, preventing the water from penetrating the coffee, and causing it to leak out. The pressure in this espresso maker is 15 BAR, enough to cause a violent reaction. Avoid packing the coffee grounds too tightly to prevent this.

I bought my EC860.M at the end of January 2015 so I've had it for 4 months at the time of writing (June 2015). My favourite coffee mug holds 300ml and is 87mm tall. I like latte.

Using the milk dispenser/frother (Item "C" on page 2 of the instruction manual) and the latte macchiato button (Item B12 on page 3 of the instruction manual) didn't anywhere near fill my mug and the coffee was luke warm even though I warmed the milk frother's pipes with steam as recommended on page 11 and warmed the cup with hot water first. To get a full mug I followed the instructions for reprogramming the latte macchiato button which I found on page 12. The first few attempts didn't produce nice coffee so I decided to go back to the factory settings.

There is no way to reset the machine to factory settings.

After more experimentation I got a full mug with very nice coffee BUT it was still much too cool. So, I decided not to use the milk frother anymore and try the water/steam spout (Item D7 on page 2 of the instruction manual). I now get good coffee which is hot enough (for me).

What I do is grind a well heaped scoop of coffee beans and load it in the filter holder cup using the 2 coffee crema filter (Items D1 & D3 on page 8 of the instruction manual) and tamp it down. I then put 100ml of milk in my mug and steam it for around 30-35 seconds. This fills the mug with frothy milk which has a temperature of around 60ºC.

Note. You have to slightly lift the spout out of the milk occasionally to let air in; if the milk just contains steam bubbles the froth collapses quickly.

I then put the mug under the filter and press the 1 cup button (Item B3 on page 8 of the instruction manual).

I've owned this 860 model for about 6 months and have been very happy with it. It is robust and produces good coffee (espresso or coffee/milk drinks) with an especially excellent automatic 'milk froth' capability; no need to DIY with a milk jug/frother nozzle etc - for me this is a significant capability !

You can also get hot water/make tea if you wish....

I think it's worth mentioning from the outset that the 4 drink option buttons produce 'just' 2 types of drink; what the doubling-up of those buttons allows you to do is precisely program different volumes of coffee with 2 buttons and different ratios of milk vs coffee with the other 2.

So, if larger liquid volumes are programmed a 'latte macchiato' is made (as opposed to a 'cappuccino') since your programmed amount of frothed milk is dispensed first, followed by your programmed amount of coffee - a 'latte' is made coffee first.

The only proviso is that with this machine the milk is all froth, so you don't get a base layer of milk (see last photo)....

I say that as I also own a Philips Senseo Latte Select, which also froths milk automatically, but which can produce both a 'latte' AND a 'latte macchiato' (as well as cappuccino) since the milk/coffee dispensing is done in the necessary order as required. Some more quick comparative comments on this model later on....

I bought (second-hand) this newer 860 model after already owning and liking so much the 'older' 850 model. This 860 adds a switchable cup warmer and a nozzle milk frother option (the 850 only has a nozzle to dispense hot water). Aside from that I believe that the 2 models are identical. I use the 860, with the 850 in storage should (when ?) the 860 pack-up !

Can you be unlucky twice?..

Ordered the first machine at the end of May after my beloved Breville, now available as the upgraded Sage in the UK, started to show signs of slowing down. Well after nearly fifteen years would say I had made a good investment.

If only I could say the same for this make and model, first impressions on taking it out of the box was a thing of quality being genuine stainless steel was nice and robust as were the portafilter and baskets, everything suggested it had been built to last and for the price compared to the last purchase was really impressed.

If only it performed as well as it looked or performed at all, as the first machine had to be sent back as failed to do a sequence as stated in the manual which meant the boiler was not working. Alas Amazon being Amazon immediately sent out a replacement so kudos to them for having such exceptional customer service and for making it so painless to return as when the replacement did exactly the same thing yesterday having failed to heat after only 5 weeks of serving great coffee I would probably have been bouncing up and down.

However given their policy to replace under the guarantee if purchased from Amazon it is not the end of the world. I have now decided to up the anti and invest in something of quality, built to last. It is false economy if a machine is only built to have a short life span. I do not believe reading other De'Longhi reviews that they are designed to last longer than two years if that lucky, which is a real shame as the coffee and performance for as long as it worked was actually exceptional.

The moral - I will always buy off Amazon but I will not be buying De'Longhi not now or in the future. NOT EVER!!!
