Product Description

De'Longhi Magnifica bean-to-cup espresso and cappuccino machine

The Magnifica ESAM04.350.S is a must for any budding barista taking their first step into domestic bean-to-cup machines. You can make an espresso or an Americano at the touch of a button, and using the integrated milk carafe you can make the perfect lungo, latte, cappuccino, or other milky drink. It produces 15-bar restaurant and coffee house standard coffee in the comfort of your own home, and in the simplest way.

Integrated milk carafe

All aspects of a typical professional pump espresso machine (like the ones you see in your high street coffee bar), such as grinders, filter holders, and steam pipes, are found working inside the Magnifica ESAM04.350.S: De'Longhi has simply redesigned, compacted, and hidden them inside the machine. Magnifica expertly performs all of these functions at the touch of one button. The traditional milk frother allows you to impress your guests by manually frothing the milk whilst making them the ideal cappuccino or latte.

Removable milk carafe

The innovative patented milk carafe plugs straight into the machine, and when you have selected the froth density to tailor your coffee simply press the button on the control panel for latte and cappuccino and the machine does the rest for you.

The system has been designed to ensure the milk never goes inside the main body of the machine to guarantee utmost hygiene at all times. The milk carafe has an auto-clean button, which when pressed cleans the pipes inside the milk carafe so that it can then be unplugged and conveniently stored in the fridge until the next time you'd like a milky coffee. When it's time to change the milk in the carafe, it can be dismantled and all parts can be conveniently popped in the dishwasher.

Integrated burr grinder
Integrated burr grinder

The integrated professional burr grinder has seven adjustable coarseness settings. The taste and quality of your coffee depends heavily on how finely the beans have been ground – choose the finer setting for a stronger taste, or a more coarse setting for a weaker-tasting coffee.

The coffee beans are freshly ground for each serving, and the coffee strength is fully programmable so you can change the amount of coffee it grinds and dispenses from 7 to 11 grams.

Removable brewing unit
Removable brewing unit

The brewing unit provides optimum heat distribution; it does all of the priming, pre-brewing, warming up, coffee dosing, coffee tamping, and extraction for you.

It is automatically rinsed every time you turn the machine on or off, and the innovative design means the brewing unit is removable for easy cleaning and maintenance.

Thermoblock is the type of boiler found in De'Longhi bean-to-cup coffee machines. It only heats enough water for your coffee serving, achieving a stable and accurately controlled water temperature that is crucial for brewing the ideal coffee.

This reduces warm-up time, so that your coffee machine is ready for use in seconds, and is made to be more energy efficient when compared to traditional boilers. The coffee temperature can be tailored further in the menu settings.

Ergonomic and easy to use

Both the water and coffee ground containers are at the front of the machine, so they can be easily removed for cleaning. The water tank is easy to refill – simply take it to the tap and fill – and will hold up to 1.8 litres of water.

Digital display

The intuitive digital display tells the user exactly what is happening at all times. It will inform you when the coffee grounds container needs emptying, and when the water tank needs filling, and will take you through all the steps of making your favourite coffee. It even tells you when it's time to descale the machine.

Two-cup option
One or two cups

Select one or two cups of coffee at the same time just by pressing the relevant button. The number of coffees selected is indicated with a single or double cup on the front panel. This function is available for the black coffee options on the machine, and automatically adjusts the amount of coffee ground in a single brewing cycle.

Personalising coffee functions

Two rotary dials on the machine allow you to tailor your favourite coffee by the amount of water and the coffee strength (amount of coffee ground).

Automatic shut off

The Magnifica ESAM04.350.S will automatically switch itself off after a pre-set amount of time has elapsed.

Adjustable coffee dispenser

The coffee dispenser can be moved up or down to accommodate both full-size latte glasses and espresso cups.

Memory function

The ESAM04.350.S can memorise your favourite coffee. This can be actioned by programming the amount of milk, water, and coffee you would like to be used, and storing it in the memory. Simply select 'My coffee' on the rotary control to access this function.

The bean-to-cup journey

Tall coffee

The function of a bean-to-cup machine is just as the name suggests: delivering coffee straight from freshly ground beans into your cup in seconds. After pressing one button to select espresso, the bean-to-cup journey starts at the integral coffee bean grinder: an adjustable, professional conical burr grinder will expertly grind the beans to your desired coarseness.

The ground coffee is then packed tightly by the internal brewing unit. Hot water is forced through the coffee up to a professional 15-bar pressure. The espresso is then delivered straight into the cup. The hallmark of a well made espresso is recognised by the 'crema', a creamy, hazelnut-coloured layer that sits on top of the espresso to seal in temperature and flavour. The thicker the crema, the better the espresso, and the quality of the machine that produced it.

If you have run out of coffee beans or want/prefer to use pre-ground coffee instead (decaffeinated for example), use the control panel to change the settings and put ground coffee in the ground coffee compartment.

De'Longhi quality and coffee

Quality and reliability remain integral to De'Longhi's brand values. All products are subjected to rigorous quality checks. The top of the range machines are still designed, produced, and assembled by hand in the Italian production sites, in order to uphold the expected high standards.

We're huge coffee drinkers and within less than 2 weeks already made more than 200 cups.

To summarise, this is a fantastic machine and well worth the price, competition with similar features is much more expensive.
This is first machine we have which makes excellent coffee and it's very easy to use/maintain.
We use to have other coffee makers but they always ended in the garage - as either coffee wasn't good or to much effort to make one & clean.

Good looking, compact in size
Well solidly made, not noisy
Built-in frother adding milk/froth directly to the cup
Adjustable amount of froth
Adjustable strength/amount of coffee as well as how hot
Ability to program your drink - exact amount of milk/coffee
Low maintenance and mostly self cleaning
Very good coffee and crema - and that's tough since I compare it to Jura Giga X7 at work!
Versatile - espresso, cappuccino, cafe latte, latte machiato, hot water, hot milk, beans or ground
Built-in cup warmer

Yet to find one - beside being now totally addicted to it!

UPDATE - 3 months later:
I'm happy to report it's the most used kitchen appliance we've ever had!
We've made > 900 coffees/cappuccinos (would have been more if it wasn't for holidays!) and machine is flawless.

Coffees are brilliant and that's not just from us - but every single guest we've had!

I bought this for my husband's big birthday, he works from home and drinks nothing but coffee. I spent a longtime on line reviewing various coffee makers before deciding on this one. It is an expensive machine, but I especially liked the look of the attached milk jug. I knew if I had a seperate one I would forever be finding it unwashed. Well I have to say, so far this machine is worth every penny. It is totally fool proof, hubby can have a large stong cup, a press of the button and I can have a weaker smaller one. Its very simple to use, machine tells you what you need to do, fill the tank, empty the grains, descale, and you can't move on without doing what you have been told to do. Coffee tastes delicious, froth is great (and adjustable). Milk jug comes apart and goes into the dishwasher each evening. I have no negitives about this machine. If you are a coffee lover this machine is worth investing in.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
For coffee fanatics this is a wonderful piece of kit but for occasional coffee drinkers the price would be hard to justify.

The machine itself looks impressive and would not be out of place in any kitchen but it is a tad on the large size and maybe too large for small kitchens or if you live in a bedsit.

Setting up is simplicity itself. Open the top lid (LHS) and add beans, pull out/fill/replace water jug and you are near enough ready to make espresso. The espresso delivered has a good crema and is very rich.

The espresso delivered straight out of the box with no adjustments was very good and I have still not had to alter any settings apart from the temperature. Initially it was not quite hot enough and now it is very hot.

The problem with this is that I do not drink espresso very often and I do not know many people that do but the De Longhi then comes into its own as it also makes cappuccino and latte with the ability to customise almost all aspects of the drink to any individual liking.

Go from big frothy cappuccino to less frothy latte, vary the amount of milk, vary the amount of coffee, change the coffee from extra mild to extra strong in five jumps and the really clever bit is that the milk is dispensed from a jug that just plugs into the machine and when you have finished making drinks there is a self clean button that cleans the milk jug and allows it to be unplugged and put straight into the fridge along with unused milk for next time.

The machine is for home use but the milk jug still holds a decent quantity, about 2 pints. So when you are ready for bed and coffee is not wanted just plug in the milk jug and get hot frothy (or not so frothy) milk for your cocoa.

I upgraded from another DeLonghi espresso machine to this all singing and dancing model and I am not dissapointed. It makes great coffee with ease. I like cappucino and this was the reason for my choice as this makes it automatically. It takes a bit of trial and error to get the quantities just right that you personally like but marvellously it automatically dispenses them once you have achieved this. Effortless coffee but of course at a price.

I did a lot of research and read a lot of reviews before buying this machine. Although several reviews commented on the temperature of the coffee, there were enough that said it was hot enough.

I've had my machine for a week now. I've adjusted the settings and customised it to produce coffee how I want it, but I can't, under any circumstances, make a latte that is anything more than luke warm, with the milk at the bottom of the cup completely stone cold.

I have set the auto on function to turn the machine on 45 minutes before I come down in the morning. I use the rinse cycle to heat it up further. I leave the cups on the cup warmer and run the hot water through them before making my latte, but still it is barely warm enough to drink and is cold in 5 minutes. This morning, I dug out my cooking thermometer and took the temperature as the latte was pouring. The milk came out at 48C and the coffee around 60C. Overall, the drink was less than 55C.

I've emailed Delonghi, but have yet to receive a response. I'll give it another 2 days until the weekend, but if I don't manage to make a cup of coffee that is warm enough to last though breakfast, I'll be returning this and looking for something else. I'm glad I haven't got rid of my old machine yet.

I've had a reply from Delonghi. The machines are designed to make coffee in the Italian style, so at 40-45C, with no option to heat the milk to anything above that. As this effectively means barely above body temperature, there's no way my coffee is going to be warm enough for the "rest of the world's" coffee habits.

I am arranging to return this and am now looking for another machine that will make a latte that will sit for 3 minutes before turning stone cold.
