Product Description

Product Description

The DES16 portable dehumidifier from De'Longhi is both compact and stylish in design and has a 16 Litre per day extraction rate. It is quiet in operation, has built-in castors and carry handle and features an easy-to-use digital control panel.

The reliable in-built humidistat enables you to set the desired relative humidity level and the DES16 also comes with a double condense elimination system, which automatically discharges the removed water either into the water tank or continuously through the two-metre attachable permanent extraction hose.

The water tank itself has a three Litre capacity and a visible water level. The integrated tank control system monitors the water collection level and automatically stops extraction as and when the tank is full.

Other features include an electronic anti-frost protection device (down to 2°C) and Bio Silver Tech air filtration system. The De'Longhi DES16 comes with a two-year manufacturer's warranty and permanent drain facility kit. It requires R134a ecological gas.

When I first saw this, I was expecting it to have a tiny extraction capacity until I had a closer look and seen it had a 16 litre/24h rating, yet it's no larger or wider than a typical oil filled radiator!

The water container comes out the left and is a little fiddly to get back in, at least the first few times. The air comes in the back and blows sideways out the front vents.

To test its performance, I set it on "continuous" and ran it in a room with the door wide open. Over a 3-hour period in our 4-bedroom house, it brought the humidity from 62% to 54% and extracted 410ml, based on a separate digital hydrometer placed in the same room. The temperature went from 22.5C to 23.0C, so unlike the desiccant type dehumidifiers I've been reading reviews about, it doesn't significantly heat up the room. This makes it useful for summer use such as getting rid of the stickiness out of the air on a humid warm day without making the room uncomfortably warm.

When plugged into an energy monitor, it measures 200 watts on low fan setting and 220 watts on high fan setting. It sounds like a fridge on the low fan setting and the addition sounding like a fan on the high setting. On the other hand, it's quieter than other dehumidifier's I've seen.

I would have given it a full rating if its built-in hydrometer & thermometer display were more accurate. When switched on, it shows the same temperature and 5% higher humidity than that of a separate hydrometer. After about 30 minutes of operation, it shows the temperature 6C higher and the humidity 20% lower than on the separate hydrometer, so I recommend getting a separate hydrometer to get a more accurate reading.

For those still wondering if it's worth getting a dehumidifier, based on my experience, it gets rid of the stickiness on a humid day and we haven't had any mould problem anywhere in the house since we first started using a dehumidifier (this is my 3rd dehumidifier). If you do photography as a hobby (like I do), it stops photographic paper from curling and I've never had an issue with mouldy lenses either.

    Excellent product 13 Sep 2010

Fantastic product for my basement and the whole house! Just buy one and you will not regret it. It works perfectly for this environment. The air quality has improved so much. I think every house should have one of these! (specially in this country!) The noise of the fan is not bad. You get a much cleaner air to breath in, It's worth to invest one.

    Works well 7 Dec 2011
Firstly I received a faulty produce initially that although had operational fans did not seem to be able to condense any water despite being operating in a damp room for about 12 hours. So that was returned to Amazon and another one sent out which works.

I chose this model as it appeared to have the greatest capacity to reduce humidity whilst being fairly small. The capacity it is advertised of is 16 litres per 24 hour period. So 666ml per hour. I've never achieved this rate. However the flat I use this in is usually between about 16oC and 22oC, and the temperature that the product is rated against is 27oC. So the 16 litres per day figure is only at optimum conditions. Currently (December) I am leaving it on whilst I am out of the house for stints of about 9 hours on a low fan and low humidity setting. When I return it has usually accumulated about 1 litre of water.

As this is the first dehumidifier I have bought and used I cannot say whether it performs better than others. It is quite expensive compared to some of the others but another reason I chose this model was for the low power use (200 to 300 watts) to avoid large bills from continuous use.

A timer would have been a nice touch. Other than that the options are a two speed fan, which is reasonably quiet on the lowest setting, but for me too loud to sleep with it on, but just about quiet enough to have on in the background and work/study. You can then vary the desired humidity target from 30% to 80%. You can set it to seek out the optimum humidity level (whatever that is) or you can use it just as a fan (expensive fan!) without the condenser working.

One thing I have noticed is that a gentle tilt (side to side) now and then will cause a lot of condensation built up inside it to trickle into the collecting chamber. I have not used the continuous drain facility though I have read on other reviews and elsewhere on the internet that you need to have the device at a slight slant for this to drain properly, though this is not mentioned in the manual.

So the negatives: cost, perhaps a misconception that it would really take out 16 litres per day.
The positives: does make a discernible difference to humidity, has improved my ability to sleep in a room that it has been operating in during the day.
