Firstly we have to realize that toasters, as a breed, are ill-tempered and bad-mannered machines. Without naming any makers, I have had one in the past which insisted on toasting the bread either pale beige or black, as the mood took it, one which assumed that all slices of bread were only 4" tall and one that trapped the bread in the slot and then set it on fire.
Bearing that in mind, this toaster does a reasonable job. It is fine when toasting two slices - a setting of 5 gives relatively evenly, well toasted bread. When faced with one slice it rebels - you have to reduce the setting and then it toasts one side lightly and one side quite dark. I have found that the solution to this is to set it to a low setting, wait for it to pop, reverse the bread and then let it pop again.
Why one should have to do this is beyond me. Why can't they fit a 1/2-slice switch to prevent the unused slot heating up and affecting the active slot?
Having said this, it does a much better job than my last toaster, which consistently produced toast resembling a piebald pony. I don't think I will find anything better, without spending a lot more.
