A.C. Baantjer is the most widely read author in the Netherlands. As a former inspector of the Amsterdam Police his fictional characters often mirror the personality of individuals he encountered during his long career.
There 37 Dekok novels and Dekok and the Dead Lovers come in at number 33, I usually read crime series in order but I jumped in at number 33 and found that no back plot was spoiled and I understood the characters well, so this could be one of those crime series that you don't have to read in order (it might be nice too - but I wouldn't worry too much).
In this novel Dekok and his partner Vledder are ordered to guard and protect a millionaire's art collection. Whilst doing this under pressure, they are called away to a murder of a young man found in a flat in Amsterdam. However, just to add an extra layer to the plot one of the art exhibits is stolen, Dekok finds himself solving a puzzling mystery.
If you are looking for a change from the vast amount of Scandinavian fiction that is on offer at the moment, why not try a new country and see if it holds up to your expectations. I enjoyed my outing into Amsterdam crime fiction, took me back to Van der Valk and all that : )
