Product Description

Bassam and George are childhood best friends who have grown up on the Christian side of war-torn Beirut. Now on the verge of adulthood, they must choose their futures: to remain in the exhausted, corrupt city of their birth, or to go into exile abroad, cut off from the only existence they have known. Bassam chooses one path - obsessed with leaving Beirut, he embarks on a series of petty crimes to fund his escape to the West. Meanwhile, George amasses power in the underworld of the city, embracing a life of military service, organised crime, killing, and drugs. But their two paths inevitably collide, with explosive consequences. De Niro's Game is a devastating, timely portrait of two young men and an entire city formed and deformed by war.

Bassam, the narrator, is a 19 year old Christian living in Beirut with his widowed mother during the Conflict between Muslims and Christians in 1982. Bassam dreams of a new life in another country and with his best friend, George, a casino manager, starts to skim money out of the casino. George befriends some powerful men in the militia and gets involved in drug dealing, crime and killing. The book is divided into 3 parts and the pace and writing changes as the plot unfolds: the first part Roma is fairly quiet and descriptive; Beirut, the second part is cutting, brutal and tough while the 3rd part Paris is like a hallucinogenic dream. The powerful friendship between George and Bassam is beautifully told set in a catastrophic period of Beirut's history. A Novel I definitely recommend.

This is an exceptional book and absolutely worth the hype - not something I concede very often. Hage masterfully conveys a devastating convergence of youthful hedonism and malaise, imbuing his protagonists' plight with a sense of inevitability, as they self destruct in their war torn city.

His writing is at times punchy, at others poetic: it's an interesting approach, and very effective. The jarringingly elegant expression of some of the most brutal passages makes for a shocking impact.

Well worth reading.
