Book Description

7 Oct 2002

The life of Hollywood’s number one movie actor, the elusive Robert De Niro, who shuns the limelight and rarely gives interviews, written by the leading film critic and biographer of Spielberg, Kubrick, Woody Allen and George Lucas.

Robert De Niro is the pre-eminent Hollywood character performer of our time: film portraits like the young Don Vito Corleone in THE GODFATHER II, Jake La Motta in RAGING BULL and Travis Bickle in TAXI DRIVER are some of the most vivid ever put on celluloid. De Niro cannot be cast to type, prefers to work for old friends like Martin Scorsese, and (apart from FRANKENSTEIN) has never played anything but 20th-century roles.

John Baxter calls him ‘the archetypal empty bottle which only becomes visible when it’s filled by a role’: which makes him such a tempting subject for one of Hollywood’s finest historian/biographers.

The author discusses De Niro’s film roles as well as his often controversial private life.

Product Description

From the Back Cover

Robert De Niro is the greatest screen actor of our time: film portraits like the young Don Vito Corleone in 'The Godfather II', Travis Bickle in 'Taxi Driver' and Jake La Motta in 'Raging Bull' are among the most vivid and intense ever committed to celluloid. He is famously perfectionist, and the lengths to which he will go to create his roles – to 'earn the right' to play them – have become legendary. Yet in his personal life De Niro has always shunned the limelight, and he rarely gives interviews.

Based on scrupulous research and conversations with friends and colleagues of De Niro, this new biography provides the first full portrait of the actor John Baxter calls 'the archetypical empty bottle which only becomes visible when it's filled by a role'. As well as his film roles, Baxter examines De Niro's often controversial private life, his fruitful collaborations with directors like Martin Scorcese and performers like Harvey Keitel and Meryl Streep, and the ambitious off-screen activities which have increasingly preoccupied him in recent years.

'De Niro: A Biography' is a fascinating insight into the American film industry and a revealing portrait of a remarkable actor.

3.0 out of 5 stars Study of a Master 13 Sep 2008

Robert De Niro has long been recognised as one of cinema's most enigmatic performers; an actor committed to the truth of his roles to such an extent that he will put himself through extremes of pain to develop a sense of empathy with his characters. As such, he is obviously a fascinating subject for biography.
Baxter's book is informative, particularly about De Niro's early years. His disucssions of the earlier films are particualrly insightful. Yet, he says little about those relationships that seem so crucial to an understanding of the way in which De Niro works. Rather than exploring the De Niro/ Scorsese chemistry, he takes on the role of critic. Instead of exploring what may have attracted De Niro to later roles, he concentrates on their commercial lack of success. This means that as the book develops, we really lose our sense of who De Niro is and why he has been such an icon and an example for so many young actors.

3.0 out of 5 stars not quite.... but not far off it 28 Dec 2003
I read this book around the same time i read Howard Sounes biography of Bob Dylan. Perhaps this led to a rather unfair comparism because Sounes work, while equally well researched, clearly leaves Baxter in the shade.

As other reviews have corresctly pointed out, Baxter's research into his subject has been meticulous... the information on De Niro's training for his craft, his family life, relations with the opposite sex, his pathological perfectionism is terrific. Baxter spends the first half of his book really filling in the bits that as a fan you would want to be aware of. Equally, and to the author's eternal credit, despite Mr Baxter's undoubted credentials as a fan, he does not fall in the trap of fauning over every aspect of De Niro's career preferring instead to cast critical eye over performances and indeed over the man's personality in certain instances. This book undeniably makes for interesting reading, the subject matter alone guarantees it, Baxter himself has done a fine job in creating a cohesive biography of a man who is notoriously private and guarded.

I only have one criticism of this book, sadly for me it's quite a big one. As the book nears half way it seemed to me that it descends into a basic filmography. By this i mean that as we begin to get into De Niro's career as a film star Baxter begins to concentrate a little too much on plots, storylines, characters when there might be more interest in the actor's relations with those he was working with, his own aspirations and indeed the paths his career was taking at specific times and reasons for those. These are all areas that ARE tackled but sparsely in my opinion, it must be noted that due to the nature of the subject information can be difficult to gather in this area.

This is undoubtedly a good book, any fan of Robert De Niro would enjoy it and it is also a worthy addition to any film fan's collection. However, i know what happens in Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Brazil etc etc, the filmography should've been confined to the appendices in my opinion. It felt, for the last 150 pages like i was reading a series of film reviews and that was not why i picked this book up.
