I was looking forward to this book but found it wanting. I think the greatest problem was the brevity. De Gualle warranted more of a book. I was also disappointed that items I'd picked up from other sources were not included. It is possible, of course, that some of them were in error but several of them were indeed widely published and researched. I also missed his collaborations with Philippe LeClerc, who was another towering figure and might have, in the postwar years, eclipsed even de Gualle had he not died in a crash.
Much of the content seems to be held at a distance, making me treasure those all too few occasions when a scene was brilliantly illuminated, as when he crossed words with Churchill's wife -- before becoming a lifelong friend.
