5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated genius, 18 Mar 2008
For me, this is their best album. I must have been about 15 when it came out. I had forgotten how good it was.
Poppier than Sugababes, more avant garde than "Kid A", it bombed and almost destroyed their career. They got timid after this and never produced anything else in the same league.

The digital remaster is certainly worth having - the older version of the CD sounds a bit tinny next to the vinyl (this happened with a lot of CDs before mastering engineers got used to the medium) whereas this sounds warm and clear.

The extra tracks are a mixed bag - the early version of "Telegraph" is very much for completists only and the 12" version of "Genetic Engineering" doesn't really add anything to the original, but "4 Neu" and the extended version of "Telegraph" are excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Difficult in places but worth perservering with! + Telegraph 12", 7 Mar 2008

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Having had this album on cassette and then vinyl (after the tape wore out) this CD Remaster is a great addition to any OMD fans collection. OK, only half the original album tracks were actual songs, but as a deliberate move away from the apparent pop of Architecture this was a good wake-up call to the listening public. "Radio Waves", "Silent Running" and "Romance..." are all strong tracks, and the two singles "Genetic Engineering" and "Telegraph" appear here as 12" versions in the bonus section. For completists out there the extended version of "Telegraph" is the rarer 5:35 mix, which starts like the 7"/album version before instrumental breaks (the shorter alternative 12" has reverse fade-in intro). The early version is of interest too, though you can see why it was put to one side at the time! "Swiss Radio International" is a good closer, sort of bookend to the original opener. All in all this features everything it should've, and the crystal clear mastering is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dazzling, 19 April 2009
By Binro The Heretic "mattieboyz" (Hillsborough, Sheffield) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Dazzle Ships is a re-issued 1981 album from synth-pop pioneers OMD and is a fine album that was released as the follow up to the towering 'Architecture and Morality', recently being performed in full on tour by the reunited band. Experimental and sometimes surreal, it also contained pure pop songs such as 'Telegraph' which helped to establish the band as one of the smartest late 70s and early 80s electronic outfits and which would be the kind of fare they would rely on from hereon in. This new direction brought criticism from fans, but along with Kraftwerk, Gary Numan, Human League, Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys they helped to establish electronic pop music in the UK and beyond throughout the 1980s.
Perky, fun and energetic; definitely one of their best.
