Manufacturer's Description

Published in collaboration with the Mission for the 60th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings & Liberation of France, Memoir '44 is a uniquely fun, simple and engaging game. Designed to commemorate the efforts and sacrifices of the men & women of the Second World War, we trust it will provide all who play it with a sense of history and the desire to learn more about that greatest generation. Our fondest hope is that it will make you want to transmit this unique historical heritage onto younger generations. To that effect, we encourage you to visit the numerous web sites we will be progressively featuring on our Links page. They offer an endless treasure trove of information on these events that shaped our history. We also invite you to visit the beaches, villages and museums of Normandy, where over 1,000 ceremonies are going to be held over the coming months.

Memoir '44 is a unique historical game where players command a horde of little plastic Army men facing-off in dozens of WWII battles on an oversize hex game board. Each battle scenario mimics the historical terrain, troop placements and objectives of each army. Deploying forces through a variety of Command cards, the smart commander uses the unique skills of his units - infantry, paratroopers, tanks, artillery, commandos and resistance fighters - to its greatest strength.

Easy to learn and fast-paced, Memoir '44 requires strategic card play, timely dice rolling and an aggressive, yet flexible battle plan to achieve victory!

Product Description

Memoir '44 is a historical boardgame where players face-off in stylized battles of some of the most famous historic battles of World War II including Omaha Beach, Pegasus Bridge, Operation Cobra and the Ardennes. Memoir '44 includes over 15 different battle scenarios and features a double-sided hex game board for both beach landings and countryside combat. Each scenario mimics the historical terrain, troop placements and objectives of each army. Commanders deploy troops through Command and Tactic cards, applying the unique skills of his units infantry, paratrooper, tank, artillery, and even resistance fighters to their greatest strength. "By design, the game is not overly complex", says Memoir '44 designer, Richard Borg. "The game mechanics, although simple, still require strategic card play, timely dice rolling and an aggressive yet flexible battle plan to achieve victory." In addition to the large, double-sided gameboard, Memoir '44 includes 144 amazingly detailed army miniatures - including historically accurate infantry, tanks and artillery; 36 Obstacle pieces, 60 illustrated Command cards, 44 Special Terrain tiles, and 8 Custom Wooden dice. Memoir '44 is designed for 2 players but easily accommodates team play. And with Memoir '44 Overlord scenarios, players can use multiple boards and up to 8 players to conduct large scale operations, experiencing the challenges of troop coordination and military chain of command on a large scale battlefield. Average game length is between 30 and 60 minutes, encouraging match play where players can command first one side and then the other.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better for younger players, 17 Nov 2008

For those of you who have a strategic mindset, this game may well give you a shock. The game is resolutely tactical and I (still) can't seem to get my head round it! That said it is extremely addictive, if dice reliant.

The build quality is variable with a good sturdy box and cardboard components, I'm less impressed by the plastic miniatures though - they're a little bit "friends bedroom age 8 with the airfix soldiers" - if you know what I mean.

This is exactly how I like war-boardgames: Easy rules, but broad, everchanging and endless strategic opportunities combined with some luck on the battlefield. I bought all the expansions and am now waiting for the delivery of the new airpack. From the "Atlantic Wall" to the deserts of Africa, from russian winters to the pacific islands - lots of fun. (Read the wargamer.com test if you wanna have it in detail.). My advice: Go for all of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic war-gaming, 15 April 2009
Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
Provides the perfect mix of realistic historical encounters, quick and easy game play and strategy.

Product is very well made, extensible and you can create your own battle scenarios.

My 7 year old absolutely loves playing this with me (admittedly he's a bright guy) he did not take long to work out the rules.

I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in strategy/war games that do not want super-complex rules or long setup times.
