I cannot recommend this book highly enough. From the first opening paragraph to the culmination of the opening ceremony, I joined the author on his self-deprecating and highly amusing journey. I had initially been, like most of the British public leading up to the Olympics, rather scepticaland expecting a turgid mixture of disaster and disappointment.

The British tend to take self-deprecation to an art form and I, for one, was certainly not expecting anything remotely worth celebrating. From the ceremony onwards the Games took the country and then the world by storm. This book deserves to do the same.

Russell Moon's writing is easy to read and quickly included me in his emotions and the joy of participating in what proved to be a memorable summer. He writes with humour and candour. The description of how he felt "like a sex offender who'd been given community service at a dance class" when he made his initial foray into getting fit and ready for the auditions put me firmly at his side. There I remained as I met, with him, the quirky and unforgettable characters along the way and celebrated the pageantry and patriotic splendour as the ceremony was completed and our golden summer began.

"Inspire a generation? We did."

Well, Russell Moon certainly inspired me. I am now going to re-watch the opening ceremoney with pride. Then I'll re-read the book. Again.

This book really surprised me. After reading it I wanted to find more by the same author but this seems to be his first. The whole feel good factor of the Olympics is tangible in this book. Right from the start I enjoyed all of the characters. It all seems so honest as well. Like me if you've never had the courage to volunteer I'm sure this will inspire you. It's just about taking a chance, throwing yourself in, enjoying what comes your way and making a difference. It could have been so dry but I felt I learned all about the inner workings of something really quite emotional. I loved the opening ceremony but now I think it was truely something very special. This book let me understand this huge journey from the perpsective of the 1000s of individuals - it wasn't just a big crowd. Thank you Mr. Moon.

Such a great read! Highly recommend this!! I wasn't there at the ceremony but after reading this and seeing the Olympics ceremony on TV I can envisage what it must've been like backstage/behind the scenes.

Reading through the book I couldn't wait to hear what the 'blokes at the bar' had to say and it was great to get to know about all the other performers; dancers, volunteers; including the mad Russian... Russell is a naturally gifted writer and has captured this very special moment in this awesome book. I absolutely recommend this book!

Mr Moon, please forgive me, but I did initially wonder if all the five star reviews for your book had been written by your friends and relatives. I have now read the book and I am leaving my own five star review!

This is a great book for anyone with fond memories of the stunning London 2012 Opening Ceremony. I was lucky to be in the audience on 27 July, and this book not only gives fascinating insights into the rehearsal process but builds and builds as the performance nears, bringing back the same sense of excitement I felt in 2012 as the games approached. By the end of the book I was overwhelmed with emotion once again.

Along with the BBC DVDs, 'Days of Wonder' is a must-have souvenir of London 2012.

I am no sports fan and the Olympics could, on that level have bypassed me. I admire sportsmen and respect their achievements but as for watching a game of anything - well, forget it. However, subsidiary events of the Olympics had me entranced. To be honest, I was (perhaps like many) a bit cynical of what the opening ceremony might have been - I had disturbing visions of cliched views of the UK and London in particular - but on hearing of Danny Boyle's appointment knew we were in for something special. And so we were. Something appeared that made you proud to be British in a very non-jingoistic way.
That show was a triumph but though Danny certainly deserved credit for it, he was not alone. There were thousands more involved, those that gave their time freely to make Danny's vision real. This is their story, told by one of their own, Russell Moon. It's an equally intriguing story and had me wanting to find out more. It's also a personal story, one of commitment by people happy to work tirelessly. It's a great read and answers many of those 'how did they do that?' type questions. It also credits everyone involved: so the credits are compendious!
Any negatives? Only, being churlish perhaps, as there are plenty of other works that feature them, there are no colour pictures of the event itself and some of those rehearsals. Still it's well illustrated, albeit in black and white.
I can really recommend this book.
