4.0 out of 5 stars Steam Up North 6 Sep 2009
By Nicholas Casley TOP 500 REVIEWER
Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
This is, at the time of writing, the latest instalment in the Ticket to Ride series of games. It was originally only released in Scandinavia but demand seems to have determined its release globally.

The same basic rules apply as from the original series, including tunnels and ferries. The map features Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and a bit of Arctic Russia (Murmansk). There is also an excursion to Tallinn, capital of Estonia. The carriage cards are of the usual design, except they have a covering of snow on top. Indeed, the whole game has an air of Christmas about it!

Changes from the original concept include no limit on the number of loco cards that can be drawn; and a globetrotter card worth ten points for the most completed tickets (instead of ten points for the longest route in the other games).

This version is not particularly radical enough perhaps to warrant purchase for those already with an earlier version, except I suppose if, like me, you are a completist and a bit f a nut for the game. But if you want a version for the family or friends to play in the cold frosty months, then this perhaps is a worthy version, given its winter feel.

5.0 out of 5 stars 9 Wagons to Murmansk 23 Dec 2010
By G. Page
Durability: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This has to be the most beautifully produced board game in my 'too big' collection! The art work on box and board is outstanding; appealing characters like Santa,a wonderful wintry theme with snow topped wagons and trains on the cards, a snowy Scandinavian landscape across the board, with predominant colours of trains and board being purples, lilacs and whites
The game is specifically designed for 2/3 players and provides a tight, exciting experience. Competition is intense for certain key routes. The southern and eastern parts of the board have many short, easier to complete but lower scoring routes, whilst the northern and western have longer, difficult to make high scoring tickets. There is even a 9 card 27 point route to Murmansk which can be made. All 4 Scandanavian countries are well represented, and my knowledge of the geography is improving!
The game is closest to Ticket to Ride Switzerland. If you have mostly just 2 or 3 people playing, this is a better, more challenging and competitive game than Ticket to Ride Europe(there no stations to make things easier). The game map is tighter than the USA game .. there are fewer alternatives if others chase your routes. I have played this and ended with a minus score, so badly wrong did things go!
Exceptionally lovely to look at; a somewhat different variant to the original game; my wife and I play this more than any of the other TtRs.

If you don't know about ticket to ride your missing out. It's a great family boardgame.

A word about this edition it's designed for 2 to 3 players only so if there are 4 of you look at the europe or usa editions.

This edition is beautiful, the lovely snowy theme of the Nordic countries makes it a great game for the christam period especially.

It has the full size more durable cards, unlike USA board, at the ferries and tunnels of the Europe edition.

I would say its a perfect gift for someone, easy to pick up and fun to play for all the family recommended I would say from 7 years up.

Forget, monopoly, cludo, scrabble get with the euro games and this is the perfect start.. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best board games on the market 19 Mar 2012

Durability: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Having purchased Ticket to Ride Europe and really enjoyed it, I have now purchased the Nordic version which is designed for 2-3 players - so good to play when all the children are away. At first when you purchase either game, you may find the rules a bit daunting with all the bits - however, like most games, once you play it the first time and work it out - you really get hooked! The board, pieces and cards are durable, pleasant to look at and well made. The game is addictive and you can be quite competitive trying to get to your destinations and on the way accidentally (or not) block other players routes!

The variations between both the European and Nordic are slight so it is easy to adapt to which ever game you are playing. I would recommend the Ticket To Ride games to any family who enjoy board games. However please note that it is only the American,European or Nordic versions that are complete games - the other countries are extension packs and you need one of the above to be able to play them.

I purchased the first one because of the good reviews and it is one of the most enjoyable all round games that I have played for years. Also the games seem to take about 1hr to play so you can just enjoy one fairly shortish game or go on to play again.

Great game for just my husband and I, or with the children. It's not just a game of chance and everyone can play their different strategies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best ticket to ride 2 player map 8 July 2014
By Adam
Verified Purchase
This is my favorite 2 player ticket to ride experience- it is great fun and takes only about 30 mins to play (once you understand how to pronounce the names). There is a lovely winter theme, but it is good at any time of the year. The trains are different colours, which is a nice touch and as always the artwork is excellent both in terms of cards and the board. All the pieces are first class in terms of production, and a joy to play with.

Two player games, if they are your thing, are tense and exciting on this map and it is a great experience!

4.0 out of 5 stars Purchased for a holiday
Me and the missus wanted a 2 player game that we could pack down and take on holiday. My wife is a keen TTR player and this 2-3 player version of the game works well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent..... If not tense!
If you've played the other map sets (Europe esp!) with less than 3/4 players, you'll know that some low play numbers result in easy map runs. Not any more! Read more
