30 Days of Night has another trick up its sleeve, too. Its vampires aren't gothic hedonists who enjoy their claret out of jewelled goblets. Nope, these are vicious, nasty, brutal creatures who'd snap your neck as soon as look at you. They look terrifying, all misshapen foreheads and far too many teeth, and the creepy shrieking noise they make only makes it worse; they seem entirely inhuman. Barrow's isolated, blizzard-stricken location makes for a literally chilling atmosphere even before the monsters show up.
The plot loses its way towards the end, and the inevitable triumph of the heroes stretches logic to its limits, but the setting is original enough to make up for that. 30 Days of Night isn't a film you'll forget in a hurry. --Catherine Haskins

Surround Sound Sensation !,

This review is from: 30 Days of Night [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
For a film that takes place for the most part at night, hence the title, this Blu-ray is brimming with detail and clarity throughout. But Blu-ray discs are not just about picture quality, which by the way is very good, they are also about sound quality and that's were this disc shines. At christmas I replaced a six year old Denon AV reiever which had Dolby-Digital and DTS, with a new Onkyo reciever (tx-sr577) that as all the HD Audio decoding onboard. I had watched this film several times before in DTS format and thought that it could not sound any better, it does, in DTS-HD Master Audio. I would'nt say it was louder but the bass is deeper and the rear speakers are more lively with sound effects, doors slamming, footsteps, gunshots, people screaming and the constant howling of the wind, yet at the same time never drowning out the speech from the centre channel. Excellent!
What about the film? Well I would rate this as one of the best vampire films of the past ten years. These are not vampires from Twilight or True Blood, but vampires from your worst nightmare, with bloodshot eyes that would make Christopher Lee envious and teeth like pirahnas (make-up and special effects are very good). To recap, this is a very good horror film which I never get tired of and looks and sounds superb. Highly Recommended.

I wanted to like this movie. There's a great idea propelling the action- the thirty days of night to which an isolated and way north little town succumbs once a year turns the place into a 24-hour Tesco for vampires- but once the set-up kicks in and we settle down to see the story play out, the slow realisation dawns that the script has absolutely no idea what to do other than tediously mark time until feature length has been reached.
Some of the action sequences are clever enough and the film has moments of great visual beauty. But the titular thirty days presents a structural problem that the movie never solves, forcing it to leap forward many days at a time to keep things moving, thus asking us to believe that a small handful of human survivors could evade the superhuman vampires who never stop searching for them for a month, all this within the confines of a town no bigger than a crossroads, cut off from the outside world by the winter. The characters are stock types effected on something like the Stephen King template, dripping with unresolved "issues" that will, of course, have some bearing on the action. The vampires are just as familiar, strutting around like some idiot emo-boy's notion of dark cool. He can keep them.

One of the best Vampire movies I've seen in years!!!,

This review is from: 30 Days of Night [DVD] (DVD)
I bought this movie not really expecting much from this movie - after some of the terrible vampire films I've seen recently; E.G Twilight.
But I decided to watch it with some friends for a Friday night in,and we were ALL, pleasantly surprised! I love what they've done to the vampires - the eyes are really creepy! The story was great, the acting was brilliant and the ending was fang-tastic! If you love vampire movies, then buy this! Here are some other Vampire movies you also might like to look at; The Lost Boys (1987), Near Dark (1987), Blade (1998), Underworld (2003), Underworld Evolution (2005), Salem's Lot (1979), Salem's Lot (2004), Dracula (1992), Fright Night (1995), Van Helsing (2004), Interview with the Vampire (1998), John Carpenter's Vampires (1999), The Night Flier (1997) Daybreakers (2009)
