Synopsis
TRAINSPOTTING director Danny Boyle returns to edgy form and reinvents the science-fiction/horror genre with this apocalyptic tale of viral infection and Darwinian survival. A fatal virus is unleashed on the British public following the liberation of infected chimps from a research laboratory by animal rights activists. The virus can be transmitted in one drop of blood and manifests itself within seconds, infecting its victims with a zombie-like state of murderous rage. Within 28 days the country's population is devastated, and the streets of London and Manchester are apocalyptically deserted save for a handful of healthy survivors who attempt to salvage what is left of civilization. Led by a bike messenger called Jim (Cillian Murphy), the survivors must contend with not only the hordes of plague-carrying zombies, but also with each other, as they manouevre toward a supposedly better future. Shooting on digital video and making excellent use of the bleak English landscapes, Boyle crafts a tale of societal and spiritual devastation reminiscent of horror classics like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and SHIVERS.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant film, but don't expect a great HD transfer..., 27 Feb 2009
The four stars is for the film, and overall Blu-ray package. As many people had said in their reviews, this film looks exactly the same as the dvd version due to the way the film was made (with the exception of the final scene). The film makers intended the film to look dirty and gritty, and that is what you get on this Blu-ray. Personally i wasn't expecting a quality HD transfer, and only upgraded because of the superb DTS-HD audio track. I saw this film in the cinema, was very impressed with the soundtrack, however the dvd version didn't do it any justice. The Blu-ray however sounds exceptional and vastly superior to the dvd. Extras are the same as the dvd (Danny Boyle Commentary, 30 min Making of, music video, deleted scenes and alternate ending, and a few trailers etc..). The disc is coded for Regions A and B.

I you own this film on dvd, and are not fussed about the DTS audio track, then don't bother buying the Blu-ray as the picture is no better than the dvd.

The quality of this blu-ray product is awful. The DVD quality is better -honestly. The film is grainy and blurred. Extrememly disappointing as the film is one of my favourites. AVOID

1.0 out of 5 stars The first Blu-Ray title to to dupe BD buyers - Beware!, 9 Oct 2008
I originally bought the DVD release of this movie the day it was released. I'm a huge fan of the movie, rating it very high in my list of great British films from the last 2 decades.

About the Blu-Ray Presentation. DON'T DO IT! Don't buy it - Run away!

As far as I'm aware, this is the first time that a Standard Definition movie has been released on High Definition format. How can this movie possibly be presented in High Definition format, when the film makers intended it to look rough in the first place? It's a well known fact that it was one of the first major films to be shot almost entirely with Digital Video Cameras (the Canon XL1s to be precise). This is not a high definition video camera and so how can a Blu-Ray presentation make any significant improvment in picture quality? - If anything, this version looks WORSE than the DVD version, fuzzy, blurred with noisy compression artefacts. On the good side, the DTS soundtrack is fantastic. I'll be taking my copy back to the shop and demanding my money back. Great movie, but save yourself some money and watch the DVD instead.
