Seventeen-year-old Caroline Wexler (Kat Dennings) is facing a teenager's nightmare: her widowed father has moved them from the big city to a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. When Caroline realises she has nothing in common with the burnout losers in her new school she pursues the one person with who excites her interest - her handsome young teacher, Mr Anderson (Josh Lucas). A bizarre love triangle ensues between Caroline, Mr Anderson and a sweet, but troubled classmate (Reece Thompson). Featuring a hit indie soundtrack in this mash-up of the bizarre and the beautiful, DAYDREAM NATION is a coming-of-age story for the 21st century.

Ok, so I was just browsing recommended videos from Amazon and this popped up so I thought: hey, why not give it a try?! For a start Kat Dennings is a brilliant, witty actress and I thought it would be interesting to see her on-screen chemistry with Josh Lucus (also a great actor).

I have to say, this is not your typical 'teen' movie - if you were expecting Mean Girls then you should probably look else where. Yes, the story is set in a high-school environment but the issues covered run much deeper.

This film has the wit of 'Juno', the isolation of 'Thirteen', the obscureness of 'Kaboom', but with its unique thriller-edge. Also, the story line wasn't really predictable, so the last half an hour I was really in suspense.

Altogether, definitely worth a watch! It's a thoughtful movie and nice if you want to escape from your own reality and problems for an hour or two!

The moody Caroline Wexler moves from the big city to a small town where the kids do a lot of drugs and are inbreed losers with 6 toes. The story at times is third person, at other times Caroline narrates. She tells us of a tale of a girl in school who worked as a stripper until 2AM then showed up for school and took extra classes. The football team, she tells us, would heat up quarters and throw them at her while she walked through the halls. A "serial killer" (dubbed a serial killer after first body was found) kills the girl and they find marks of heated quarters on her legs. The waste dump fire and serial killer were under utilized as metaphors/symbols.

After her death, it appears the overly mature Caroline is the prettiest girl in school. She seduces her teacher and a classmate. As time goes on we discover the teacher has the persona of a psychotic character portrayed from his own novel and has developed an unhealthy need to continue his relationship with Caroline.

The movie makes clever use of juxtapositions to create humorous scenes. There are also slow scenes and slightly annoying first person narration. The soundtrack was fairly lame. The climax scene is supposed to be a culmination of the scenes building up upon each other. In an indie, it is not necessarily predictable, but it is at least metaphorically or symbolically part of the movie. This one was not. It was a complete let down and a lack of closure by the writer. Want to watch a clever indie, try "Chumscubber."

I saw the trailer for this movie a couple of times and it really put me off seeing it i thought it was a cheap verison of the classic JUNO. Well i just ate my words up after i saw this striking and fun film, it was really enjoyable and the story is just about growing up and the funny moments of life, Kat Dennings is the show stopper for me she plays a young teenage girl thrown into a new town and high school with a lot of funny, drama and serious tones thrown into the mix i enjoyed this little story very much.

A modern, cult-like TV styled movie about a teenage girl. ?? is the lead, a questionable and unlike-able force, who begins a love affair triangle with a teacher and fellow student. All this happens oddly whilst a serial killer is on the loose, in the countryside backdrop of rural America.

I found it rather slow, dull, contrived and with a main lead who fails to captivate or titilate like the idea should. It attempts to be clever and incisive but I would argue it simply isn't. A teen film, with teens, for teens.

Daydream Nation probably hasn't been seen by many people but it should because its simply a class little film. The story centres around Kat Dennings character who has just moved to a little hick town in America and sets her sights on Josh Lucas' teacher character. Reese Thompson last seen in the undervalued and rarely seen Assassination of a High School President is once again brilliant in this little corker of a film. Andie Mc Dowell is also in it, I mean its been a while since I seen her on screen, worth seeing it for her alone. But forget about performances, films are about entertainment and boy does this entertain. I can't recommend this film enough.
