Product Description

"Day Walks on the South Downs" is the fifth title in Vertebrate Publishing's series of compact and portable hill walking guidebooks. This book showcases 20 circular routes, between 6 and 14 miles (9km and 22km) in length, suitable for hill walkers of all abilities. The routes are split into three geographical areas - Hampshire, West Sussex and East Sussex - and include walks to the most historic and beautiful areas of the Downs, including Winchester Hill Fort, Black Down, Chanctonbury Ring, Devil's Dyke, Ditchling Beacon and Beachy Head. The author of this guidebook, Deirdre Huston, is a South Downs local and keen hill walker. This is Deirdre's third book with Vertebrate Publishing, following the successful and popular Cycling in Sussex, and the recently released Cycling Days Out South East England. Each route in this guide is described with easy-to-follow directions and details of distance, navigation information, refreshment stops and is plotted on clear and easy to use Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 mapping. Also included is a detailed Appendix. Vertebrate Publishing is one of a new breed of independent publishers, dedicated to producing the very best outdoor leisure titles. We have critically acclaimed and bestselling titles covering a range of leisure activities, including; mountain biking, cycling, rock climbing, hill walking and others. We are best known for our own titles such as "Lake District Mountain Biking", "Dark Peak Mountain Biking" and "Revelations", the award-winning autobiography of rock climber Jerry Moffatt. a great little find 10 July 2011
The first great thing about this book is the size, it fits comfortably in any coat pocket. The walks are cleverly described using some wonderful photos. Deirdre has once again shown a great ability to provide the reader with some great local knowledge.
I found it extremely helpful to have the map references included in the introduction so that I could check the details before starting off.
I am looking forward to doing all 20 walks over the next few months

Great little book 26 May 2012

I've only done one walk from this book so far but was very impressed. The routes have a good variation between the downs and lowland countryside and there are plenty of short cuts on longer walks if you don't want to do the full distance. Directions are extremely clear even when the paths on the ground are not so there is little chance of getting lost.

Fantastic! 14 Mar 2012

We are really enjoying this book and have completed the first three walks so far. The routes are really well thought out to cover a range of terrain and the lengths are spot on. We've taken picnics on each so far and have found a lunch break about all you need. You could take the walks much slower but generally we have taken around 4 hours with a decent break in the middle. The size of the book makes it handy to pop in a pocket and the directions are clear and simple. Can't fault it really!
