Day of Vengeance is one of the lead-ins to DC's Infinite Crisis, which I suspect will be collected either later this year or early next year. As such, you do not get the full story, although the writer does a good job of making the story stand on its own.

In fact there are two stories here, the first is a Superman/Captain Marvel story, in which Superman is possessed by Eclipso, a stalwart DC villain. The second story is the tale of how Eclipso seduces the Spectre, Angel of Vengeance, into destroying all magic as it exists in the DC universe and features a virtual who's who of magical characters. A small group of lesser such characters joins together to stop the Spectre as he wreaks havoc in various imaginative ways. Many of these you may not have heard of, although for me a couple were a lot of fun to see again (for example the Blue Devil who was in the first American comic I saw as a kid). It's a real tale of the underdogs, who include in their number an alcoholic detective chimp who is immortal and can talk all languages, human and animal, against one of the greatest powers in existence.

The story is well-told with nice character moments inbetween the wide screen action. There is humour and drama and some clever twists. The art is on the whole very good, not so realistic that it takes you out of your suspended disbelief but lively and expressive and rich in detail.

If there are failings they are that the ending isn't a real ending, and that the woman Eclipso ultimately possesses will mean nothing to you if you haven't read or read about Identity Crisis. I can't really say any more than that for fear of spoiling both those stories. But if you add in the text features that give us the background of the characters and the history of magic in the DC universe, this is well worth buying, especially if you're interested in how DC plans to remake their universe.

I have been collecting all the graphic novels from the infinite crisis lead-ins and this one I have to say stood out. As a person who has been more of a marvellite than a DCer, I found that I knew the main aspects of the DC world such as the main players like batman and the JLA, but knew little about the aspects of the DC world such as magic.
I think that the great thing about this graphic novel is the fact that it has two stories, both individually great to read. The first is very much a small time 3-parter following a load of random suicides and deaths induced by anger, which superman and Captain Marvel come in to investigate. This leads subtly into the next story.
The second story is about the fact that the spectre (a higher power that believes in punishing evil justly) is going on a rampage attempting to destroy all magic after losing its host (which I assume is Hal Jordan).
Both stories I have to say are great, but the second stands out because of the interesting cast of characters.
This graphic novel introduces the formation of the team known as shadowpact, a group of magicians and magical powered beings. I like this book more because it has lead onto shadowpact getting its own series and I hope to follow it.
I havn't read infinite crisis yet but I think when I look back on the lead-ins, this will be my personal favourite.

This collection of comics is incredible, offering both beautiful art and wonderful literature. What I enjoyed most about Day of Vengeance is the fact that the main characters aren't well known and are minor in the DC Universe compared to characters such as Batman and Superman.

The plot is basically that a servent of God, The Spectre, has gone insane and has declared war on all magical beings on Earth. A group of minor heroes choose to fight back, attempting to prevent the destruction of all magic. At the same time, Captain Marvel, a magical being who's strength is comparable to Superman's, is on a mission to stop this Spectre.

The best part of this comic book is the duel literature employed throughout the comic. There are five members of the group who are standing up to this Godly figure, The Spectre, and each of them have different emotions and beliefs. The writers let the reader dwell into each of these characters minds and allow the reader to understand the members attitudes towards others, allowing the writers to include humour in a comic where death is frequent.

Overrall this comic is amazing, and probably the best out of the "Countdown to Infinite Crisis" collection, and is a vital read for anyone who loves reading.
