D Day
On a Sunday evening read Darcy's d-day with type 1 diabetes. A half hour must read, you can spare half an hour ... The honesty and life changing impact of a word "diabetes" that can run smoothly from a person's mouth, generally with ignorance of the facts and consequences of such a life threatening disease. Recommend to your friends and family, help to raise awareness in young and old alike. This book makes you think.

I decided to download this book as if anyone could relate to this story I could. My son was diagnosed at 2 and a half years old. He's now 5. Unfortunatley though we didn't see the symptoms straight away and doctors failed to see them too. Any longer and we may have lost him. Unfortunately I had to give up reading this story half way through. I found myself getting annoyed. This lady describes diabetes as if it is the end of the world. Believe me at first it is but oh my god you have got to carry on and no feel sorry for yourself. She describes that she has not had a holiday in 10 years. Hang on. Your daughter is only 10 when diagnosed so you make it sound like it the diabetes and extra kit etc that is stopping you from going away. In my experience, why let a little kit bag stop you from going away! Yes you need a note from the hospital saying you have needles etc. Airport staff are used to this and I have never had to even show them the letter. The incident at the pharmacy, do your really think this person was being awful? In my experience they are very helpful. I ring in my prescription and they pick it up from the doctors for me and deliver it to our house. With regards to parties, my son is 5. You can imagine we can an awful lot of invitations to parties. We go and he has treats. This is balanced with an insulin injections. I don't tell him he can't have anything. He knows he can have treats but he also knows he is not allowed lots. This does not cause a problem and he is quite open about it. He will tell his friends parents he is diabetic and they are very understanding. I don't think I have a laid back attitute but I am not letting this run my life or my sons for that matter. It is just something we have to deal with and take into consideration when planning things. We still have sponteous days out and meals out. Nothing is regimental. Why should it be as long as we take his kit bag everywhere with us. I could go on but obviously this is your experience and maybe you should have just kept a diary for your personal reading. Every day I count myself lucky that my child is still here and we can manage this, with the help for the team at our local hospital, school and family. I don't feel sorry for myself. I worry about my child but which parent doesn't.
Unfortunately I would not recommend this book!

This book is a brave, raw account of a mum's first dealings with her child's shock diagnosis. I went through almost exactly the same with my son at age 5, and although it doesn't get easier to manage, you get better at managing it. More needs to be done to raise awareness of this invisible disability and this lady certainly is doing her bit. There are thousands of parents who feel the same and it's always reassuring to see someone telling it how it is. It's a good read, only half an hour, and if you're wondering what Type 1 diabetes is, she tells you in clear terms. If you are going to review it - do read it all first. It was like reading my own story. And if I'm honest, it is devastating when your child has an auto immune disease and you would swap places with them any day.
