A Day in the Life of Israel chronicles the daily life of a nation as seen by sixty of the world's best photo-journalists. The photographers were given the freedom and facilities to take photos of whatever they wanted, the only restriction being that they only had 24 hours.
Those 24 hours were on May 5th 1994, which, by sheer coincidence happened to be the first day of official peace between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organisation.
The photographs are arranged chronologically throughout the day from early morning to late evening, each being accompanied by a small location map, and a short explanatory text.
The book contains the best 200 of 100,000 shots, so we have here truly the best of the best.
What the reader gets is a frank portrayal of life in Israel at that time as seen by an outsider, with striking pictures of people and scenery. This is not a glamourous tourist brochure. One gets the flavour of life just as much from the pictures of parties as from the photograph of a mother cleaning her machine gun while her children watch cartoons on the TV in the background.
This book is not only a treat for those who enjoy photogaphy or travel, but also, as time moves on, it is becoming a historical record of life as it was then.
