Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Will state-of-the-art Hollywood CGI FX and director Roland Emmerich succeed where Al Gore and many a frustrated environmentalist have largely failed: raising the world's consciousness about the dangers of global warming? Austrian-born composer Harald Kloser has been given some striking imagery to score--New York City inundated by the rampaging floods of a new ice age; Hollywood itself beset and torn asunder by swarming tornadoes--but the TV and European film veteran (this marks his big-budget American film debut) succeeds by largely underplaying his orchestral writing, imbuing it with a mounting sense of drama and inherent tragedy. The elegiac, bittersweet beauty of his main theme suggests a more organic take on Hans Zimmer, while elsewhere his cues show a graceful maturity that seems rooted largely in the 20th century Russian classical masters. And while Kloser gets ample opportunity to musically portray that humanity-polluted Nature can be one unforgiving mother, his work seldom condescends to its audience--or sinks to the level of typical disaster film sturm und drang overkill. --Jerry McCulley

3.0 out of 5 stars Amazing 1st Track - The Day After Tomorrow, 28 May 2004
While the cynical ones will be predicting the film's downfall, I for one am highly anticipating The Day After Tomorrow as one of the best films of the summer. Emmerich did a good job with ID4, and hopefully The Day After Tomorrow will repeat the same style of combining human drama with breathtaking special effects.

In fact, human drama might be the key point of the film. Emmerich has chosen a relative unknown, Harald Kloser, to score the film, and after listening through it I can see why. Emmerich's usual composer David Arnold usually composes strong, rousing, bombastic action scores - Kloser's score here is emotional, and seemed composed more for dramatic films like The Shipping News or A Beautiful Mind than a special effects movie.

The first track is simply beautiful, very emotional. Also it seemed to be influenced by Hans Zimmer's Thin Red Line (the Journey To The Line theme and the tapping sounds you hear in the beginning of that track). The rest of the score however couldn't live up to the beauty of the first track, very simply because that beautiful theme disappears only to reappear once in President's Speech. To be fair Kloser probably didn't have a chance to use the theme often. The rest of the score is a combination of atmospheric scores with a couple of action cues, which seemed to be influence by Danny Elfman's Planet Of The Apes.

Overall, an average score with an amazing first track, which seemed to be a fluke. But one that perhaps makes owning the score worthwhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing., 13 Jun 2004
By S. HAYWARD (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is one of the best soundtracks of the year - for one of the best films of the year.

My favourite tracks are:

The Day After Tomorrow (Track 1): Amazing orchestral strings and horns make this track (and scene) brilliant. A very pleasant listen.

Tidal Wave (Track 4): The use of percussion make this track incredible. It really reflects the panic that is the atmosphere in the scene.

Superfreeze (Track 11): Again fast-paced and brilliant.

President's Speech (Track 14): An awesome return of the first theme.

A brilliant score which, surprisingly, suits a disaster film when still keeping an emotional and dramatic feel.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOWW !!, 4 Jun 2004
The theme of this movie is surviving against all odds, and that is what the music conveys. A very good score from a new composer. I don't know why people criticize this movie for its plot. The plot is great. A man actually cares for his son. That is pretty much one of the biggest themes in this movie: caring for others. All around one of the best disaster movies I have seen (accept for Deep Impact). The score is emphasizing all your feelings. What simply is the best to reach within music!

Fantastic film - unbelievably bad soundtrack. I must have been so engrossed in the film that I did not reaise that the soundtrack was as bad as this.
