Product Description

Synopsis
Scientists talk about the planet being threatened by a possible climatological disaster. In this big budget feature the threat becomes a reality in quick time. The planet's oceans become cooler sparking deadly storms. A new ice age begins.
A climatologist Jack Hall played by Dennis Quaid ('Cold Creek Manor' and 'Inner Space') is separated from his son Sam, played by Jake Gyllenhaal ('Donnie Darko' and 'The Good Girl'). As the disaster grows and the city of New York is threatened by sub-zero temperatures he attempts to make his way to the city to save Sam. As the state of the art special effects show entire cities destroyed by tidal waves Emmerich ('Independence Day' and 'Godzilla') ensures that the social and political issues of the day are put to good use.

3.0 out of 5 stars Overrated by many, underrated by others., 20 Feb 2005
While it is true that this film's plot is a clichéd, father-doesn't-know-son-well, father-saves-son-at-end based story, and it is also true that, like with all war films to date, the film is audaciously biased towards America's power over the rest of the world, the film does make a genuine point about humanities dependance and complacency when it comes to global warming, and for that it deserves a star. The other stars go to the amazing special effects which are, quite simply, the best ever seen in cinema history. You'd be hard-pressed to find anything that even comes close.

My verdict is that this film, despite having a flat plot and amateur-ish acting (apart from Dennis Quaid, who proves once again that he can give even the most emotionless parts a bit of soul), you're certainly not going to be bored watching this.

2.0 out of 5 stars Awful, 23 Nov 2004
By Ben (London, UK) - See all my reviews
Admittedly I was pretty sceptical going in to this one. Disaster movies laden with special effects and no real plot / character development have never been my thing - but I think this one really sinks to a new low.

The only real star is the special effects which are quite frankly amazing. However brilliant special effects do not cover up the fact that this film has little/no plot other than the inconceivable notion that a young man's father will cross a natural disaster ridden United States to meet/save his son.

Jake Gylenhaal's performance is wooden at best and embarrassing at worst. While other indie stars choose mainstream projects of interest and role's that actually give them a chance to demonstrate their abilities (see Toby Maguire in Spiderman) Jake seems to have picked the first major script that landed in his lap and his career will suffer greatly because of it.

Only for special effects junkies..

5.0 out of 5 stars The day after tommorrow..... will they survive you ask?, 26 Oct 2004
By Nick Fellows (Berkshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This fabulous action film always puts questions into your mind. Whether its about will they get enough food to survive or whether its "how long will they be in this library for?". The whole film is about the whole world freezing over. At one point in the movie, the earth's temperature goes way below 0 for a few seconds and one man just freezes while he's getting out of his helicopter. There are a few incidents like this so the main charactors decide that they and all the towns people need to go somewhere where it's warm so they can all share each others body heat. In the end, they choose the library. Everyone starts shoving books into the fire. One guy goes,"I've got some books on tax law down here that we can burn!".In the end, the earth of cource is saved from completely freezing over. It's an amazing film that has everything from action to comedy. A must buy!!
