On the DVDs, executive producer Paul Stupin does his usual commentary track for two episodes, and he's joined by Kerr Smith. They discuss the series itself, Smith's character, and Smith's subsequent career more than the events of the episodes. The second-season DVD set disappointed many fans by replacing a large portion of the music, and that trend continues in the third season, most surprisingly in the loss of Paula Cole's theme song. Instead, the opening credits feature Jann Arden's "Run Like Mad," which was used briefly in the international broadcast. Stupin explains the switch as an attempt to do something different and creative, but then admits there was also "a bit of an economic reality." Fortunately, the DVDs do have John Lennon's "Imagine" and Mary Beth Maziarz's "Daydream Believers"--songs that in dramatic context simply could not have been replaced--and it could be argued that a veteran viewer might skip the opening credits anyway. Still, for many fans, the music made Dawson's Creek what it was, and without all of it--especially the theme song--the DVDs seem like a compromise rather than a permanent keepsake. --David Horiuchi
PS On the american website it says on the reviews that the theme tune has been changed. BEWARE.
but this season holds something extra for fans of pacey. fans that believe the series would have been better given a non character specific name like 'the creek', rather than 'dawsons creek' a name which frequently forces the writers to come back to the title character when really the show operates best as a 100% co-starring cast rather than one star and its supporting actors.
pacey is my personal favourite of the creek characters and in this season the writers really put him on the screen. been the first to have a serious high school relationship (with andie in season two) to havin the most intense, and possibly most grown up relationship (with joey in season four) and finally ending the show as the happily ever after couple (joey again in season finale), i believe pacey is more the heart of the dawsons creek relationship ethos rather just the comic relief dawson fans think hes there for. this season shows him first getting over his break up with andie, and then beautifully falling for joey in a well crafted and believable run of episodes. and in between the two pacey lights up the screen as undoubtedly the star of the season. add to that jens new relationship, jacks new life style and dawsons one-off time as a well crafted supporting storyline, this season is one of the gems of a generally amazing series that speaks to its audience in a way noone else can.
if your a fan of dawsons creek you want this season, if your a fan of pacey (or joshua jackson as an actor) you need this season, and if you don't like dawsons creek why are you looking at dawsons creek dvds?
