Product Description

Album Description

`Discovery' is surely one of the most exciting experiences in the arts. And the first contact with a great new singing voice can be as memorable as the first time you saw a loved one. If this sounds like hyperbole, take it from me: I do not use the word "great" lightly nor do I exaggerate when I say that you will long remember your first encounter with the vocal magic of Margie Day... ARNOLD SHAW

Poker are proud to finally present Dawn Of A New Day (1968) and Experience (1969) as a value-for-money "2 on 1" release. Two classic solo albums from Norfolk, Virginia's finest - MARGIE DAY, originally released on RCA in the late 60s and both albums now making their CD debut here.

Blessed with a wide and secure vocal range, Margie is capable of the belting approach or of the tender whisper: Soulful Pop / Jazz and R&B are just some of the epithets that could be applied to her infectious vocals. Check out the tight-throated delivery; the tremendous feeling she has for changing timbres, tough to tender; the elongated syllables with mounting tension that can leave you wrung emotionally dry.

And if that isn't enough...the whole package is enhanced by some charming and entertaining notes and a full-colour booklet.

What next? 20 Jun 2009

Format:Audio CD
Poker is a new label set up by Cherry Red and its where anything could happen after the previous one by 60s Pixie Girl GINNY ARNELL.
Margie Day was actually a singer with the Griffin Brothers Orchestra who were responsible for the first singles on the then new Dot label in 1952.Their flop single-Tra la la (they call me a blues singer) was chosen to launch the career of Pat Boone and was the B side of Two hearts two kisses in the States-here it was a track on the first Boone album of Greatest Hits.
Otherwise Margie Day is just one of many unknown R & B ladies.Very interesting to see her only 2 late 60s albums-made-as-albums issued here but it would have been better to have her early 50s stuff
However when is it the turn of Jan Bradley-the only artist who ever made the Top 10 to never have a CD issued of her complete works
And Carol Ventura-a one time Pixie Girl who turned into a jazz singer cutting 2 albums -this could be another twofer

I was cynical when I read the "album description" - I wondered what old pap they were trying to sell me.
On listening to the samples I became intrigued and thought I'd give Margie Day a try.
I'm glad I did. I know a cross between Eartha Kitt and Esther Phillips may be an acquired taste but this Cd should appeal to some soul fans, female pop vocalistas, and maybe a few jazz people.
Thanks to "Poker" for making these two interesting, classy albums available. Great presentation too.
Really - I never thought I'd find myself willingly listening to "Wouldn't it be loverly" this side of a torture chamber's walls.
