Book Description

In a world devastated by nuclear war with humanity on the edge of extinction, aliens finally make contact. They rescue those humans they can, keeping most survivors in suspended animation and begin the slow process of rehabilitating the planet.

When Lilith Iyapo is 'awakened', she finds that she has been chosen to revive her fellow humans in small groups by first preparing them to meet the utterly terrifying Oankali, then training them to survive on the wilderness that the planet has become.

But the Oankali cannot help humanity without altering it forever. Bonded to the aliens in ways no human has ever known, Lilith tries to fight them even as her own species comes to fear and loathe her.

I read this first years ago when I got a copy from Bromley library. I remember thinking it was astonishingly original, and so I was glad to see it had been made available for kindle. I have since read other Octavia Butler stories and they all have a quality of the unexpected, often visceral, often disturbing, but usually interesting and compelling.

Brief idea of what book is about: set in a post-apocalyptic future where the earth has been all but destroyed by nuclear war, Lilith, a young black woman, wakes to find herself aboard an alien spaceship. The alien race, the Oankali, have 'rescued' her, along with any other humans they could find from the ravaged earth, and have 'cured' the earth itself. Lilith and the other humans have been kept asleep for many decades. The Oankali have the ability to manipulate genetic codes and they have cured the cancer that is hereditary in Lilith's family. The Oankali can do many things to 'improve' human life, but there is a price to pay - a price that many humans find unacceptable. This first novel covers Lilith's experiences from when she awakens, meets the Oankali, learns of their intentions, and tries to help her fellow humans to adjust to their new reality. Most of the story takes place on board the huge Oankali ship and in a facsimile of earth.

Octavia Butler was a great, underrated writer of sci-fi/fantasy with a specifically female perspective, and this trilogy of novels ('Dawn' is the first) particularly tackles the nature of xenophobia which she, as a black woman in America, must have had particular experience of, or views about. In fact, on this re-reading, I find the discussion of human xenophobia is the central theme and in some ways the most interesting idea. I think that in the later two books, the theme becomes wearing.

Well written. Thought provoking, couldn't put it down. A well spun story of the human condition and our sometime self destructing behaviour. Highly recommended.
