4.0 out of 5 stars Unreal races in real places, 22 April 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Thames Racer (PC) (Video Game)
Haven`t you ever seen London from the Thames? No? And you would like to? All right. Choose a character from six ones (4 more you`ll get later) - everyone has his own skills and a unique boat - and go! The first championship will take you... Where? You are right. To Amsterdam! And in the end of the game you`ll come to... Right! To Venice! You ask me where is London? You supposed that game was about racing in London? Who told you about London? O.K., O.K., don`t worry, it is a middle stage. Although Thames Racer had to be named, in my opinion, Europe Boat Racer or something like this, the game is nice. You can choose Sightseeing, Single Race or Championship. The first one is a serious thing. You can explore the Thames in East or West London, channels of Amsterdam and Venice that are reconstituted in every detail. There is a little map with names of places you glide by. Very cognitive. The only shortcoming - graphics isn`t the best. Without shadows houses, cars, boats look like toys. What can improve the impression? Water. Waves, reflections, very natural and interactive - wind make its own waves, boats their own and explosions make big waves. Explosions? Yes! Leaving Sightseeing you leave a serious part of Thames Racer and go to a funny part. Races make you forget about realism and graphic merits and demerits. What can you think about gliding at 100 mph in narrow channels or enclosed river districts, trying to evade boats and ships, rockets of your opponents and to launch your rocket or torpedo to them? And don`t forget to pick up some bonuses, you can get a turbo, a power jump, a mine etc. Lots of fun! No, Thames Racer isn`t a simulator. It looks like Midtown Madness 1 or 2 on the water - funny, unreal races in real places. Somebody would like it, somebody wouldn`t. As to me, it made me to plan a tour to Amsterdam. And somebody perhaps would like to buy a boat to sail on the Thames?
