Product Description

The charming adventures of a little gnome with a big heart. Based on the world famous children's books The Gnomes and The Secret Life of the Gnomes by Rien Poortvliet and Wil Huygen, David the Gnome headlined Channel Four's children's programming in the early 1990's. Narrated by Hollywood legend Christopher Plummer and featuring Tom Bosley (Mr Cunningham 'Happy Days', 'Father Dowling Investigate) as the voice of David, this classic animation is avaiable for the first time on DVD. David The Gnome is the wise woodland doctor who lives with his wife Lisa under a tree and protects all the inhabitants of the woods from the evil ogres and trolls. Join David on his journey to all the corners of the Gnome world as he travels on his trusty fox Swift, who he summons by whistling. Did you know? That a Gnome is seven times stronger than human beings? A Gnome's sense of smell is nineteen times more developed than yours? Why Gnomes wear pointy hats? Find out aobut these and many other curious facts, kept secret until now, with the kindly Dr Gnome as he dispenses his wise advice and teaches the Gnomes to love and respect nature. EPISODES 1. 5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless 16 Jan 2010
By Blakey
Format:DVD
I remember watching this cartoon on channel four on Sunday mornings in the 80's, no doubt it's an old fashioned cartoon from a simpler time but it is totally timeless and in my opinion one of the best things ever made. Buy it for your kids, or for yourself, you need to.

Grew up watching David the Gnome. Love this show. Great quality. It's an old show but the quality of the DVDs are great. Would definitely recommend to those who also grew up watching David, Lisa and Swift!

5.0 out of 5 stars A delight for all ages! 17 Sep 2012

I grew up watching this show. It combines a beautiful mixture of moral learning and mystical advernture that you just can't get in Japanamation these days. This wonderful show combines lessons about nature and old world values, without being boring or overbearing. Its a show that you can easily watch with you kids. And I can guarantee that they will have some questions simply because they don't understand some of the old way of doing things. It will definately make your childern more grateful for all the amenities they enjoy/take for granted today.

There is the occasional tree hugger undertone, but childeren don't notice it because they have no political veiw points yet. The lessons are about being helpful to others and respectful to the world around you, lessons that todays youth are in bad need of. It is not a purely educational program but an advernture in every episode that imparts and reinforces values along the way.

I highly recommend this video to anyone with a child over 2 years of age. Dr. David and his wife Lisa will be remembered fondly by your childeren for years to come and hopefully the things they learn while watching this show will stick with them just as long. I watch it now simply to reminisce of that simpler time in my life and one day soon my own childern will have the chance to see it.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars BUT..! 13 April 2013

I read that a lot of people were getting bad versions of this set. The person that is responsible has stated on more than one "bad" review that it was due to a bad batch of pressings. Well, as far as that goes it must be fixed because all four of my disks work. On the contrary, the packaging on mine was terrible. Disks three and four do not fit and are loose in the case. With that being said, I see no reason to take a star off. Also, there is no episode listing so you will have to go to Wikipedia for that information.
As for the quality of the transfer from VHS to DVD, it looks and sounds fine to me. I am 31 years old and grew up on this show and am very thankful this company bought the rights and brought it to DVD. My one year old has been watching it with me as I bought it for him. I forgot the show had a message as well as being well written with awesome animation. When my boy starts gaining comprehension of what he is watching, it is going to be just that much more special to him as it was for me. I highly recommend this and if you happen to get a bad copy, send it back. The seller or Amazon will fix it just like anything else. I have been an Amazon customer for many years and have never been ripped off. One way or another all issues I've had were fixed. It's worth a shot!
