Product Description

David Tennant A Year In The Spotlight is biography which examines the media interest in the actor David Tennant. This eBook is 356 pages in length and all proceeds go to the cancer charity AICR which David Tennant supports.

2008 was a massive year for the actor David Tennant in terms of the press interest in him. He was the star of one of British television's leading dramas, Doctor Who, and he played theatre's most famous role, Hamlet, for the Royal Shakespeare Company which won excellent reviews from the critics. He also played in Love's Labour's Lost on stage, chose to announce that he was leaving Doctor Who live on national television, had to withdraw from Hamlet to have an operation days before the London press night but managed to return to the role for the final week of the run in half the usual recovery time. Add to that the numerous awards that he won throughout the year and barely a day went by that David's name was not mentioned in the British press.

It was a roller-coaster ride too for his fans; keeping up with all his news, watching Doctor Who episodes on television, listening to his radio and TV interviews and making trips to see him on stage in Stratford-Upon-Avon and London, as well as reading and posting on the masses of David Tennant and Doctor Who fan forums online.

This book seeks to look at an amazing year in the spotlight in the life of one quite humble actor through reports in the press, through comments by his friends and colleagues and through reactions by his fans.

As well as a section of all this theatre reviews, the book also covers:
All the awards both David Tennant and Doctor Who received during the year
An in-depth look at the filming of Doctor Who Series Four
The media interest in the Doctor Who Series Four Press Launch
A detailed account of the Hamlet rehearsal process
Fans reactions each of the Doctor Who episodes plus the ratings that 3,000 fans gave each one
All of David Tennant's TV and radio interviews during the year using his own words as much as possible
The media articles that David had signed for another series of Doctor Who and then the reaction to him announcing that he would be leaving after the Specials
The headlines that he used a real skull on stage during Hamlet and the little known fact that he continued using it during the London run too
Whilst playing in Hamlet and Love's Labour's Lost David Tennant fitting in filming the Steven Poliakoff movie Glorious 39
David Tennant pulling out of Hamlet to have an operation on his back
David returning to the stage on the night of the announcement of Matt Smith as the new Doctor

This book is well researched and present a great insight into the life of this prolific hard-working actor. It deals with the many different aspects of his working life from the stage, film and TV, to radio and audios. And amazingly all in just one year under the author's spotlight.

As an admirer first and foremost of Shakespeare, I wondered if this book would reflect Tennant's love of the theatre and his outstanding performances on the stage. I needn't have worried, it was all there in the well written pages, capturing as they do, his zest for life and the stage. I believe his is one of the 'Great Hamlet's' and and his performance in 'Love's Labours Lost' was also truly remarkable. I was lucky to see him twice in Hamlet and once in LLL. I found Ms Williams research the media coverage of these roles well collated, quite fair and for those of us interested in his stage work a great memento and record.

Tennant's work on the Doctor Who series, which has captivated so many is also here. His interpretation of the Doctor for his residency in the Tardis, is truly phenomenal, making him 'My Doctor' as he is for so many. Again, just like the stage performances mentioned above, this book is a fitting record and memento of one year in the 10th Doctor's life. Details about the making of the series, its public reception and so much more are to be found in these pages. Sue Williams book leaves us in no doubt that David Tennant is one of Britain's truly great actors, both on stage and screen.

She has also covered the tremendous amount of charity work he undertakes on top of his heavy schedules. He has demonstrated that both The 10th Doctor and Hamlet have hearts, and so does he.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and informative 29 Nov 2009
This book is a must-have for all fans of David Tennant. It is crammed with information, articles, anecdotes, reviews and quotes, and it's presented in a very easy-to-read style. Some of the images are disappointingly small but they don't detract from the enjoyment of the book, and there are many original colour photos to compensate. With David Tennant's career continuing to flourish, I hope that this is the first in a series of similar books.

There's so much information in this book that it's easy to forget that it only covers one year, proving how busy and popular this actor is at the moment!
The book is well presented in chronological order, with many fascinating reviews and articles and plenty of supporting images.
It's a lovely tribute to David Tennant, and a wonderful souvenir for his fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars a good read 6 April 2010

This is a very interesting insight to the hard work and long hours put in but this talented actor. The layout of the book is in a diary format, month by month. There are extracts from interviews given by David Tennant and comments by critics both the good and not quite so good. The last chapter of the book gives all reviews especially of Hamlet. The author does not intrude in her writing into the private life of David Tennant. There are good colour photographs, but the black and white pictures are too small and many are not very clear. However, this book still makes good reading.
