Beautiful horn playing,
By A Customer
This review is from: David Pyatt - Recital (Audio CD)
This CD contains what I think is the best collection of works for horn and piano anywhere. Many are pieces which I have enjoyed playing myself, and it is good to have something to aspire to as a young up and coming horn player! Pyatt plays with subtlety and grace. I think it is the simplest pieces which make this CD, the two Damase works outstanding in this regard, although Pyatt makes everything sound simplistic no matter what the difficulty level is. This can be annoying at times! He never feels the need to let fly with loud dynamics unless absolutely necessary. If you want an example of beautiful horn playing, this is the CD to have.

Pyatt Recital,
By Geoffrey Randolph - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: David Pyatt - Recital (Audio CD)
David Pyatt is one of the leading horn players in the world right now as one of the principal horn players in the London Symphony Orchestra. He combines many wonderful aspects of playing on this CD and shows his versatility throughout the entire instrument. He has a lightness and deftness to his playing that not many posess and is wonderful to listen to - no matter what school of horn playing you were trained in or have a particular affinity for. There are two reasons that I would recommend this CD to anybody. One is the obvious that Mr. Pyatt is a very high caliber player and two is that this CD is a fantastic educational resource. Mr. Pyatt couples little known pieces like the Koechlin Sonata and the Abbott Alla Caccia with some of the most standard pieces in the horn repetoire like the Beethoven, Hindemith, Franz Strauss, and Schumann. This is a superb recording that should be in every horn player's collection and even in the collections of non-horn players.

David Pyatt, horn,
By Ted Ehnle - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: David Pyatt - Recital (Audio CD)
David Pyatt is an excellent player, depending on your conception of the instrument. He plays with the traditional "American" sound, i.e., without vibrato. All of the pieces were composed for horn and piano (no transcriptions). This CD is an excellent addition to any serious horn player's library.

Fine Performance,
By W. Kittler - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: David Pyatt - Recital (Audio CD)
A wonderful album. The Nocturno is my favorite, and although I don't agree musically with some of Mr. Pyatt's ideas, the technique is great, with a minor exception (listen closely to the longest grace note figure). If you want some different tastes and some rarely heard pieces, get this recording. Although some of the music isn't really pleasant to listen to (in my humble opinion), the nearly flawless and beautiful playing won me over. I think he could have done more with some of it, but it's a lot better than most of us hornists can do, so for the wonderful technique and boost of inspiration, I give it a five star rating.
